He's gambling on the "reasonable" wing of the Republican Party (led by him, by default), prevailing over the crazies, who he thinks will self-destruct sooner than later. He'll have to contend with Jebbie for the title, and even Rubio is showing signs of becoming more literate with respect to the writing on the wall. Christie is first in line, and is counting on his (considerable) visibility to keep him there. So far, he's not wrong.
