affect gerrymandering has on national elections. President Obama won by 5 million votes, you can't easily gerrymander away 5 million votes. The OP was talking about only the battleground states, not really the red states. With all states going district by district the red states along with the battleground states would have to give up some Democratic votes. The Democratic votes gained in the red states would probably cancel out the Republican votes gained in the battleground states. Of course the blue states would lose a few Democratic votes also. Hard to say just what the outcome would be but it would be closer to a democratic vote. Anything that gets us closer to a democracy is good as far as I am concerned.

The best way would be to get rid of the electoral college all together.
