It's sort of a tactic of ... certain groups. "Oh, you're worried about animal welfare? Well, what about all the PEOPLE who are dying? Isn't that more important?!?!" Well, you know, we aren't single-minded. We can work on many areas of injustice at once! Image that!
And like you said, these things are all intertwined and influence each other. Women tend to be in lower socio-economic groups DUE TO male privilege, which then adds another unprivileged group to a woman's resume.
