In reply to the discussion: Joe Lieberman gave his farewell speech today to the Senate ........ [View all]democrattotheend
(11,605 posts)I had never heard of him until Gore chose him to be his VP, but as a Jewish American, I was very proud. And he wasn't so bad back then...a little conservative for my liking, but still a Democrat and good on most issues.
But then when Bush decided to invade Iraq, he jumped on board and was as enthusiastic as any Republican. And it was all downhill from there.
For what it's worth, he has been good on some things. Like, playing a leading role in getting DADT repealed. And being reliably pro-choice, and pretty good on the environment. I give him credit for that.
Still, he has been a thorn in our side for years and I am glad that he will be replaced by a true Democrat.
I know this isn't the "good riddance" that most of you are giving him and I don't blame you for it. But since he's retiring I thought it more appropriate to reflect on his whole career as a Senator, including the few bright spots.
