(28,876 posts)I was part of the movement that spawned "hipsters", but moved on before it was a "thing". I found the desperation and ultimate failure of being an "individual" and "important" annoying and somewhat futile. By and large, these people take themselves entirely too seriously. It seems to me a movement inspired by the rise of social media and the fall of Western importance in the world. Most hipsters I've known seem to be grappling with the reality of becoming adults, the awareness that they may not be destined for "great" things (i.e. celebrity, wealth) and the lack of understanding that "good" and "important" lives can be lived nonetheless. Faced with their own mediocrity, they choose to drop out and become legends in their own minds, focusing their efforts on being "first" at the latest trends and impressing their peers. Sort of like high school and college forever...and ever...and ever.
That's my oversimplified take, anyway.
