In reply to the discussion: Teacher Writes ‘You Can’t Be A Democrat And Go To Heaven’ On White Board [View all]knitter4democracy
(14,350 posts)First of all, if you look at the pic, the quote is at the very top of the board, a place most of us teachers (I'm home ill today--otherwise, I'd be teaching my ACT prep class right now) use if we're going to put anything underneath it. It sounds like the students were having a discussion, so she put a contentious statement a student made on the top of the board, indicating they were going to discuss it further.
In another article, the mother of the student who sent the picture to the superintendent and the media (not to the principal, mind you, and not to the teacher herself--why follow procedure if you can get on the news and create drama?) is now saying her daughter's been bullied and she's pulling her daughter out to homeschool her. Something tells me that this isn't the first drama incident from this daughter, and something tells me that she isn't going to be homeschooled for long.
We don't know why the girl forwarded the picture, either. We're all assuming that it's because the student disagreed with the statement and the teacher agreed with it, but given other clues, it could just as easily be the opposite. We haven't heard from the teacher, the principal, or other students in the class, just the daughter and the mom who's saying this is part of a pattern of bullying and abuse of her daughter (which may or may not be true, but she hasn't said anything publicly about what that bullying was and why her daughter's being bullied).
I'm going to cut the teacher some slack here. Class discussions often get contentious, and it's not always easy to control them.
