By pardoning Nixon he started us on the path to our present lawlessness. Up until that time, no one was above the law. It was argued that Nixon deserved special treatment, that he was somehow too important to be subject to the same rules as the rest of us. And that argument won, which put us on the path to Dubbya openly bragging about being a war criminal.
