3. She's already there, just won't admit it

The current mindset of the GOP would consider her to be a RINO. Politicians of her stripe are routinely "primaried" in order to maintain strict ideological purity amongst the ranks. She is no longer wanted within her own party. Not exactly wanted within the Democratic party either. So, Meghan meets all the basic criteria for an independent. She's drawn a "line in the sand" and the changes she advocates for the GOP are highly unlikely. Four years is a long time to wait for what should be an obvious decision, here and now.
