Kerry is up for re-election in 2014. Secondly, there is no jeopardy that his seat will go Republican. None.
A Democrat would be appointed, and then a Democrat would win the seat permanently.
What I don't get is why everyone thinks the President would do something not in his best interest?
It's his administration, he'll pick the best person for the job at this moment.
He took Hillary from the Senate and that didn't seem to phase anyone.
