I am a pragmatist. I love Kerry. But in 2004, with war fever still hot, and trying to beat an incumbent... he was just not going to win.

As much as I liked Kerry as a person, I didn't see him as a can't miss candidate,

Yes, because the polls were really close, quite a bit closer than this election on the state level.
