Some suggestions:
Dennis E Ross Middle East adviser to five presidents who is stepping down in December.
Former Senator George J Mitchell Jr negotiated Northern Ireland peace, resigned in May as Special Envoy for Middle East Peace. Probably too old at 77, though.
Former Ambassador David Hale current Special Envoy for Middle East Peace.
Richard Holbrooke former Special Representative on Afghanistan and Pakistan. Republicans would probably oppose on the grounds that he is dead.
Marc Grossman current Special Representative on Afghanistan and Pakistan. Not as qualified as Holbrooke, but breathing could be an asset.
