18. Not so fast

A Trident sub requires a great deal of support, none of which exists in 1917.

Just convincing the people in charge at the time of your capabilities would be a job requiring consummate political skill and no small degree of luck.

These kind of ideas get kicked around quite often, if there can be said to be a consensus opinion of people who like to discuss this sort of scenario it's something like this: the world is a big place and people in the past were no more stupid or inept than humans today.
