I mean, to not even proofread his "ships" statement to check it against reality even a neocon advisor should see speaks volumes at both who they are and who they think their base is. Unreal.

He's so insulated by his lofty position, he's conflated the reasons for getting there: His privilege and wealth allowed him to amass more power. He then thinks nobody could get as far as he if they weren't so smart. Therefore he's "smart", and if it's always been "my way of the highway" for him, he's not going to see his own faults. Now he's a sheltered sneering douchebag thrust into the real world and he just can't deal with that fact it isn't his way or the highway anymore. Same deal with Trump. I call it poetic justice.
