I think it's natural to want someone to be blustery and confrontational, especially when the 'other side' is getting away with bullshit. Obama isn't like that and I've realized he has own way and does get things done, although every now and then, I want him to roar.
About the debate - if Obama had reacted to Romney, it wouldn't have served him well at all. Romney really wanted him to - he was practically begging for it so he could fire off his zingers. Staying cool and detached without any blunders was exactly what Obama needed to do.
