(392 posts)The only logical answer is the Universe is infinitely old, and infinitely large. This doesn't rule out a Big Bang, it just means that there have been an infinite number of big bangs. A beginning requires either a creator or a point of absolute nothingness, neither of which answer any questions without raising bigger ones -- who created the creator, and where did this creator come from, or if there was absolute nothingness, where did the mass needed to create a singularity come from?
My guess is that the universe has, forever, expanded and collapsed on itself, creating an endless cycle of big bang, expansion, collapse, repeat. This idea, in one form or another, is beginning to gather a measure of support among theoretical physicists.
