(57,936 posts)stamps ARE WORKING. But they are earning wages too low to permit them to buy food without assistance.
That is the result of the corporate disregard for the needs of their employees. That is the face of the eat-the-weak economic cannibalism that right-wingers now call "capitalism." That is not my grandfather's capitalism. Please.
It's just barbaric.
That a person with two kids works 40 hrs. a week, lives in a tiny two-bedroom apartment in a crummy building, gets up every day and works for 8 or more hours and still needs food stamps. There is something wrong.
And every child should be able to enjoy an ice cream once in a while in the summer.
I'm a huge popcorn fan. It's a comfort food for me. And I owe my love of it to the fact that popcorn is affordable. You can give a treat to a lot of kids with just a couple of handfulls of popcorn. The poor man's ice cream.
But even we had ice cream once in a while.
I don't think I would keep silent if one of my friends complained about poor kids getting an occasional ice cream bar.
Besides the fact that the mom on food stamps is buying ice cream bars provides income to the manufacturers of ice cream bars and to the farmers who grow the products (like hopefully milk) that go into the bars. And that too, support for farmers, is part of the rationale for food stamps.
