...which I am sure are monitored during hours when the doors aren't locked. I believe that if someone who looked "suspicious" to the security team walked in, they would step in and talk to the person.

Unless there is a lock-down situation (which has happened once in the six months I've been there) a person can walk in off the street, get in an elevator, go to my floor, walk into my company's space, and into my office without having to show ID or talk to anyone except the receptionist/accounting/HR person in our office.

I thought you thought it was strange that an office building would have security.

There are many kinds of security. In the summer of 1979 I went to New York City to visit a woman who was an undergraduate at Columbia University. She lived in a high rise dormitory. The security in that building was about the strongest I had ever seen in any building up to that time (other than military bases.) There was a live guard on duty, and there was no way I could get past the ground floor without explicit permission from someone upstairs. I was screened every time I walked in even after staying there for a week.

San Diego is a pretty large city, but other than the relatively small downtown area it feels like living in a small town most of the time.
