In reply to the discussion: Chuck Todd smacks down Romney surrogate over false welfare claim [View all]Swede Atlanta
(3,596 posts)The Republicans are pointing out that the Obama Administration, consistent with current law, allows states to seek waivers from some of the work requirements, subject to specific conditions. Governor Romney took advantage of this when he was governor.
Obama has not changed the law nor is he enforcing it with respect to the social safety net any differently than any of his recent predecessors.
But the GOP wants to portray Obama as this community organizer (like Jesus) who wants to just give stuff from the rich to the poor. Nothing could be further from the truth.
The fact we have more people on food stamps than ever is because the economy is still very weak, overall poverty rate is higher than in recent history and people are hurting. It doesn't help that the do-nothing Congress (House because they won't vote on anything that doesn't involve denying a woman to control her own body or stripping Americans of the benefits of the ACA and the Senate because as sure as they fart the GOP threatens a filibuster) has not voted on a single bill that is directed toward stimulating the economy with respect to jobs. The only exception might be the recent Transportation Bill.
