Apparently, it too was once stolen but was eventually found.
However, there are earlier paintings on panel, such as the Mona Lisa. IIRC, the Venetians came up with the idea for canvas because paintings on wood did not fare well in Venice's humidity...necessity again becoming the mother of invention...
