Anyone watch Doomsday Preppers and see freaked out republicans?

that's all i see when I look at these people.
I can't imagine the pain and stress they are putting their families through
while their preparing for, and possibly hoping for, a civil war or major
attack.

my right wing sister in law just posted on her facebook the other day asking
for tips on emergency preparedness and long term food storage. i think a lot
of these right wing lunatics are actually willing to give up freedoms (by isolating
themselves) that so many of our veterans fought for, just so they can prove a
political point to themselves.

3. I think most of them are freaked out Republicans

That's who built ugly concrete bomb shelters in their back yards in the 50s and that's who's been stomping around in the woods playing militia.

They amuse the holy fuck out of me, all those guns and ammo but few things like bandages, antibiotics, and even OTC medicines. Oh, and forget about skills like basic mending that would allow their clothing to last a little longer before they'd gone naked and would have to wear a badly tanned squirrel pelt over their junk as they ventured out to find someone like me who can weave and sew.

I'm perfectly happy to see them all retreat to the woods to live in their dank caves, bristling with guns and eating mostly cold food out of rusting cans. They're welcome to it.

After that first toothache, maybe they'll realize they're the crazy ones, not us, and seek a little treatment for all that grandiosity and paranoia.

4. It's obvious that many of them believe and saving up food and being prepared

for the elements, but other than that their philosophy is "he who dies with the most guns wins".

5. I think the perfect gift for your sister-in-law would be.......

......some seeds that are guaranteed not to have been genetically modified. Or perhaps a power generator that runs off of solar. Or perhaps she might even take some comfort in receiving an autographed copy of Ted Kaczynski's "Tips For Rural Survival."

8. Emergency Preparedness is Good

Especially if live in hurricane country like Florida (or New York)
or earthquake country like California (or Kentucky).

Of course we didn't really think New York was hurricane country until a couple of weeks ago
and we didn't really think Kentucky was earthquake country until like yesterday.

The point being that stuff can happen just about anywhere and it's good to have some food and other emergency supplies put by.

Even if their reasons for doing are totally whack.

13. Most normal people have candles and flashlights

and enough canned food to tide them over a few rough days. Some of the richer ones have generators and enough gas to get them through two or three days.

What's totally wacko is trying to prepare for a full cultural meltdown. There is really no way to prepare for something like that, no matter how many guns you have. At some point, you're going to need services from somebody else and that's going to cost you a lot if you start out by pointing a gun at him or her.

15. I Didn't Say Anything About Guns (I don't even own one)

The OP'er's sister asked about food storage and emergency supplies. Good things to have.

Most normal people have candles and flashlights and enough canned food to tide them over a few rough days. Some of the richer ones have generators and enough gas to get them through two or three days.

If the "Big One" hits, it will take more than a couple of days for anyone to remember that our little mountain community exists.
The roads would likely be impassable for some time, since the San Andreas fault passes through most of them.
We keep enough food on hand to last more like a month. Some of this would likely be shared with less-prepared neighbors in such an event.

We have fairly frequent power failures. When a tree falls in the forest, our power goes out.
The longest lasted a week. We have a generator. During the longer power failures, that gets shared too, enough to keep the neighbor's freezer from defrosting.

What's totally wacko is trying to prepare for a full cultural meltdown. There is really no way to prepare for something like that, no matter how many guns you have. At some point, you're going to need services from somebody else and that's going to cost you a lot if you start out by pointing a gun at him or her.

I agree. Our approach is quite the opposite.

the desert to do target practise, and he shot his own finger off. Cried like a baby.

10. These idiots have just enough resources to hurt themselves

or worse yet, hurt someone else. Unfortunately their kids are taught to buy into that paranoia and they will propagate it to their children.

It really does remind me of the story from Omni magazine that I read back in the 80's called "The Marching Morons".

Personally I have been getting ready for the zombie apocalypse.... be it the classic slow shambling kind of zombie or the faster 28 days later type of zombie....and spam has it's own key......

11. If that's their idea of living,

then I pity the fools. Hunkering down in a bunker with MREs and guns for just themselves isn't living. Prisoners in solitary confinement almost have a better life. They will be needing some heavy medication to keep them from shooting each other after a few weeks of that.

12. I think it's always a good idea to prepare ...

But I do believe Glenn Beck and a few others right wingniks are preaching that a political apocalypse is nigh ....

I like seeing them scurry to and fro, getting wigged and gnashing their teeth .... Their fear is self induced and is part of that Obama Derangement thingy .....

"That's it ... Yes .. BUY that six ton container of rice - You will need it!"

14. I saw

one where the guy is convinced there is going to be a massive smallpox outbreak that will devastate this country. You know, that virus that was eradicated, largely due to that big bad gubmint (and the WHO), decades ago.

Also, two of the people/families they followed were convinced that Russia is going to return to its former Soviet glory days.

"Russia is our number one threat", sound familiar to anybody?
