Ryan's latest whopper: Oops, I 'overlooked' 20% of my income

Daily Kos diarist kenm writes:

From the NYT article on Romney's newest tax info release:

In an amended return also released Friday, Representative Paul D. Ryan, Mr. Romney’s running mate, disclosed that he and his wife had initially failed to report $61,122 in income from 2011. He said the failure was inadvertent. The change raised their total income to $323,416 and increased their taxes by $19,917 to $64,674, or 20 percent of adjusted gross income.

They owed a penalty of $59 for the original underpayment. The Ryans explained that they had overlooked their income from the Prudence Little Living Trust. Mrs. Little, who died in 2010, was Mrs. Ryan’s mother.

Yup. I overlooked that $60K, almost 20% of my income. $60K here, $60K there, how am I supposed to keep track of it? Who can remember every penny? Besides it came from some obscure source I'd never remember ... what was it again? ... oh yeah, your Mom's trust.

Or maybe, just maybe, what I overlooked was the fact that I would be the vice-presidential candidate and wouldn't be able to count on the trust income going unnoticed and unreported.

1. Has there every been someone foisted on the national stage

with such a breathless regard for how sharp he was, who had such a regular stream of gaffes that were excused as honest mistakes?

Said he ran a 3 hour marathon when it in fact was over 4 hours - oh, funny story, I just forget, and my brother ribs me about it.
Signed letters requesting funds from stimulus bill when he made political hay about it - well, my staff just jams papers in my face and I sign them, what good politicians like me do.

If this is what the extra special, sharp washington politicians are ...

2. The 2011 return is meaningless, he can file an amended return in three years

and include the other 8 million, and take the rest of his charity deduction. It's just whitewash.

3. Janesville

Hope all his "constituents" get all this kind of wonderful publicity of their golden child. I hope they are finding all the dirty little deeds he has done over 12 years in Congress.

I hope they vote him OUT of Congress. If Obama wins, Lyin' Ryan will just continue to block everything regardless of who it hurts back home.

4. Good thing for his opponent to ask voters...

How out of touch do you have to be to NOT NOTICE that you had $60K in income? How many of you (voters) earned $60K last year, and do you think you'd notice it?

10. The problem, at least in Janesville, is that the local media, which essentially consists of one

newspaper, The Janesville Gazette, has never done an honest job of covering Mr. Ryan, and it has gotten worse since he was put on the ticket. Nearly every other day it feels like they print a new fluffy "interest" story on the congressman. They might print a negative story on the guy when it's absolutely unavoidable, but it's usually tucked away somewhere in the middle of the paper.

5. This compares to Buffet's secretary...

Ryan, at this point in time, anyway pays a higher percentage than his "boss" in taxes. Of course, that could change several times between now and Nov. 6th...

6. Well they should be glad that they remembered it now.

They would have had a bigger fine than $59.

7. So how many "omissions" are there to the "Lyan Ryan" budget?

Of course there are none - since there are no specifics to his budget cuts.

9. If he paid the extra tax in Sept., the penalty

for late payment should be $4,780, not $59. Wonder where the $59 figure came from?
