a book war hath begun

mi padre, who makes some Huns look like flaming liberals, and I exchange a bag of books at every meeting. I have to admit that I began it by including H L Mencken, and a collection of Robert Ingersoll, that so impressed me, that I was shocked that I had no chance to have read them before.

Dad, in his response, began including Brad Thor books, moved on to one O'Reilly POS, and now, some book from Glenn Beck. the Overton Window.

how can i respond in kind?

Give him The Audacity of Hope. Or if you want some humor, a Bill Maher, Jon Stewart or Colbert book.

3. A book I somehow always end up promoting: "Lies My Teacher Told Me" by James Loewen

I think he should start paying me royalties at this point

Does he read the books you give him?

4. Return those books to him and say...

Pop, I only read books that make me smarter, more intelligent, or better informed.

Then give him a couple of Robert Fulghum books.

8. "In kind" to a book by Glenn Beck and company?

http://www.amazon.com/U-S-History-Dummies-Steve-Wiegand/dp/0470436395

http://www.amazon.com/Complete-Idiots-Guide-American-Government/dp/0028643534

Probably a safe bet that these would be immeasurably useful to anyone who took anything they wrote seriously.

9. It sounds like you have started something that you can't control.

Have you given him "The People's History of the United States" by Howard Zinn yet? (Actually anything by Howard Zinn)

http://www.amazon.com/Peoples-History-United-States-P-S/dp/0061965588

Or "The Republican Brain...." by Chris Mooney

http://www.amazon.com/Republican-Brain-Science-Science--Reality/dp/1118094514/ref=sr_1_5?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1358467991&sr=1-5&keywords=liberal+politics+best+sellers

How about "Reflections of a Rock Lobster" by Aaron Fricke

11. It seems that you have misrepresented your dad.

14. No misrepresentation. It seems that he LOVES bush

And really hates Obama.

He is an amazing guy to talk to - so long as it is not about modern politics. Then, it is impossible to talk. I think he gets ever more conservative each day. I just learned late last year, he decided to watch Fox.

Scary, that.
