The Church Where Tim Tebow Will Speak Is Very, Very Antigay

The outspoken New York Jet has previously shot an anti-abortion commercial for Focus on the Family and is now joining forces with an extremely antigay Texas pastor.

New York Jet Tim Tebow, Pastor Robert Jeffress

NFL quarterback Tim Tebow is set to be a guest at a Dallas megachurch with a vehemently antigay pastor. And we really do mean, vehemently.

Tebow, of the New York Jets, is listed as a "special guest" on April 28 on a website for the First Baptist Church. The church is well known in the city and elsewhere for its antigay pastor, Robert Jeffress. Here are a few of his anti-gayest hits starting as long ago as 1998 and continuing in recent months:

- In 1998, Jeffress checked out all the books from a Wichita Falls library that were inclusive of gay parents and promised never to return them. His protest led to many more copies of Heather Has Two Mommies and Daddy's Roommate being donated to the library, and a waiting list formed just to check them out.

- Jeffress gave a two-part sermon in July 2007 called "Homosexuality Is a Perversion." In it, he complained that "homosexuality is being crammed down our throats" by activists who are using "brainwashing techniques." To help his congregation stay vigilant, he listed the supposed techniques in their Sunday program. Listen to an excerpt below.

1. I really wonder about whether Tebow is just using the whole religion thing to promote himself.

I really enjoyed his last season with the Broncos and rooted for him. I just liked that style of offense. One time though I saw him caught off guard by the camera. He was just sitting on the bench talking to a teammate when he looked over his shoulder and saw the camera. He then obviously realized that trailing in the game, he should pray and bowed his head.

His going to the Jets was a big mistake. They never really figured out how to work him into the offense. One game was a complete cluster. They couldn't even get the right guys on the field and get the play called in time when he came into the game.

Tebow really should have gone to Jacksonville. I would have thought he'd have gotten a much better chance to play and make a difference there. Where would they love that guy more?

2. I'm not sure how deeply rooted his religion is, but he sure does like publicity, imo.

3. I got sick of him

when he was at Florida. Not his play, just the reverence of his religiosity throughout the entire conference. Then he did that anti-choice ad for the Superbowl and I decided my reaction to the worship of him was entirely justified.
