Christian School Suspends Gay Student, Fires Mother

http://www.addictinginfo.org/2012/06/26/christian-school-suspends-gay-student-fires-mother/

A Christian school in Harrisburg, PA suspended a boy for the “sin” of being gay. His mother was a teacher at the school. She was fired for standing up for her son.

The mother/teacher, Sharon Wright, is suing the Covenant Christian Academy in Federal Court, claiming that,

the school suspended her son for the “sin” of being gay, then subjected her to “scathing condemnation and blame” for supporting him rather than demanding that he “renounce his sin” – a situation so fraught that it led to her firing.

According to Wright, she has taught at the school for ten years. She taught fifth grade and had two sons enrolled at the school. The eldest of the two sons announced his sexual orientation in a blog post in 2009. He was a senior in the school.

When the school saw the blog posts, they suspended the boy. The two parents were called to a meeting with the school’s principal, Gloria Sanelli, who then informed them that he would not be allowed back into the school until he, ”renounced his sin.”

A school board member, Rich Raynor, added, “your son is broken, and it’s your job to fix him.”

3. If dogs were in charge we would be better off

Although the butt sniffing might be a problem.

5. I've always thought dogs could do more if they were allowed to run free in packs.

Every neighborhood could have its own pack for
neighborhood security and therapy. The malevolent
would just stay away or be challenged at the perimeters.

6. they could probably also help a great deal with recycling

instead of putting unwanted puppies to sleep, they could be
put to work at recycling -- ripping everything to shreds

(only if nontoxic)

8. Too broad brush.

There are many religious affiliated schools with active GLBT communities, clubs and other supportive groups. This is an extreme example of the worst, and by no means only, kind of religious school. But it doesn't represent all of them.

10. Not broad at all.

Look at what is happening with the Catholic Church and the pressure being placed on them to comply with dogmatic teachings.

11. I wonder if there are any numbers showing just how many religious schools are LGBT-friendly.

Do you know? Or can you name a few?

7. That's a horrible thing and they should be glad to be out of that school.

Hard to believe they stayed with it for so long.

I don't think it's the "New Dark Ages" however. In the past, this kid would have most likely just stayed in the closet. His coming out was brave. His parents standing with him was brave. It provides a path for others.

9. You're more optimistic than I.

Near as I can tell, the Dominionists are winning, day by day, little by little, driven by the whips of their relentless and cruel leadership (Jesus Camp, anyone) and their own enduring passion for their imaginary mandeity. Bah. You say things are getting better, I say they're coming to a head.
