One of the Harry Potter books sold millions of copies to Americans that way, which is why starting with the fourth one, I think, they then came out at the exact same time everywhere.

Ian Rankin's books may not command quite that much attention, not that many Americans might buy it from the UK before it comes out here, but you should think about it.
