Roar of the Tommy Guns, smell of the crowd

This discussion thread was locked as off-topic by krispos42 (a host of the Gun Control & RKBA group).

The traffic jam began just off Dixie Highway - the four-lane U.S. 60 route between Louisville and Fort Knox - and crept through a hilly autumn forest for more than a mile to the Knob Creek Gun Range.

The slow-moving snarl last weekend brought upwards of 17,000 people to Knob Creek's three-day Machine Gun Shoot, an event that twice a year draws machine gun collectors and enthusiasts from around the country to test out weapons like Tommy Guns, water-cooled Brownings and M16s.

--- snip ---

Inside the gates of the Knob Creek Shoot, gun dealers mingled with Tea Party activists and sport shooters. Knives, ammunition, all types of guns and accessories, and bumper stickers were on sale from about 225 vendors.

There were military insignias, tri-cornered hats and "Don't Tread on Me" flags. At least one booth sold flags and banners with swastikas, and uniformed paramilitary groups also displayed signs bearing the Nazi symbol.

4. Maybe you can answer a curiosity of mine ...

... I know it's legal to own a Class III firearm and frequently not even that difficult to get -- depending on your location. But, where and how can you LEGALLY use one? Hunting would be a no-no, obviously, and any range to which I've ever been would go nuts (and not in a good way) if I opened up with an fusillade on a target. Even shooting on private property would draw the police once the neighbours reported hearing automatic gunfire. It would be a true waste of both time and money if these weapons just sat around being looked at. It would be like having a trophy wife who couldn't leave the house.

In this dandified world in which we've created, I can only imagine firing automatic weapons outside of a military base would be looked upon like someone smoking a cigar in a nursery school.

5. many ranges rent full-auto weapons

I've fired full-auto weapons at outdoor ranges in Idaho and indoor ranges in Arizona.

Nobody cares enough to call the police.

8. At a shooting range.

Just about every time I go to the public shooting range here I hear full-auto fire.

2. so these "paramilitary groups"

people buy and sell cheap copies of German uniform items of that era, often people think it is the real thing.
The history of the "Don't Tread on Me" flag:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gadsden_flag
I think it should be reclaimed from stupid people.

9. Locking

This is about recreational shooting, and would be material for Outdoor Life. It is not about guns laws, self-defense, crime&violence, or the 2nd Amendment.
