Licensed Gun Nut stands his ground against a 14-year-old girl's chihuahua and kills it.

Well I guess he was a law-abiding and responsible gun owner....until he wasn't? Or maybe he was just standing his ground?

Either way I'm sure the NRA will call for more guns and licensed "law-abiding" gun owners so that America can be a safer place.

14-year-old Detroit girl says that a neighbor shot and killed JoJo, her 1-year-old Chihuahua, because he wasn’t on a leash and was making too much noise.

The licensed gun owner, however, told police that he gunned down the tiny dog because it was threatening him.

The girl, who WJBK declined to identify, said that she had gone inside for a few minutes while JoJo ran free in the yard. When she came back outside, the neighbor warned her to take the dog back in the house.

“When he saw my dog running out of the bushes, , ‘I’m going to handle him myself,’ and then I guess my dog had run back up on him again, and he just shot him,” the teen recalled as she cradled the dead dog in a blanket.

11. No. You need NOT to carry a gun.

You need serious professional help. I wouldn't want to arm the paranoid and panicky, if that's even what this man was. Obviously he had no business carrying a loaded weapon if he could be scared by a 3 lb doggie. My gosh! That poor puppy and his girl!!!!! She will live with that memory her whole life. She'll need counseling to help her come to terms with this traumatic event, so she doesn't act out in turn. DAMN THIS!!!

5. I've was bit by a Chihuahua when I was seven or eight years old. ...

Consequently I personally dislike the breed. I consider them to be barking rats. A Boston Terrier is a much better bread if you wish a small dog. (Note: Just my opinion which is largely influenced by my experience as a child.)

But I would never consider a Chihuahua attack as threatening to my life or health so I wouldn't use my handgun for defense. Of course if I was bit and couldn't find the owner, I might have to get a rabies shot.

Last edited Thu Apr 4, 2013, 08:08 PM - Edit history (1)

a license to shoot chihuahuas costs in Michigan and how high the bag limit is?

(Of course the guy that did this is an idiot and he needs to be prosecuted to the fullest extant of the law. To imply that all 'gun nuts' would do something similar is a cheap shot. How do we know he was a 'gun nut'?)

(I had to make an edit because I accidently wrote 'ia' instead of 'is'. I wouldn't wish to offend anyone with Iowa roots to report me and for a jury to hide my post because of a typo. I recently had a post hidden because of an innocent typo.)

I'm not anti-gun, just anti-stupid where guns are concerned. In a perfect world, we could all have whatever guns we wanted and nobody would ever hurt another person. But in the world we actually live in, too many people are being hurt and killed. So, it's incumbent on those of us who support gun ownership to search for solutions.

about the Michigan statutes (or any state) on situations like this to make an educated comment. I will make an uneducated comment however. If this guy thought about shooting this little dog before he actually committed the crime, as in premeditation, I do not think he should be sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

35. Fair enough.

When put that way, it does seem extreme, but I keep coming back to what a despicable act it is to harm a defenseless animal. People who can do such things need rehab or incarceration. I left the door open for rehab. Our society should make it clear through very tough consequences that animal abuse will not be tolerated. In that regard, punishment should be severe. I might go a bit farther than some on how severe. I have no sympathy for those who'd abuse a defenseless animal.

24. I hope there's a very careful and thorough investigation here, starting from the premise

that it's extremely unlikely that any adult human (or child, or other dog, or cat, or any living entity larger than an unusually small hamster) could ever be genuinely threatened by a chihuahua. I'll bet that there is a history of bad blood between the families involved, and the shooter simply seized an opportunity. And if that's the case, charges are to be desired: animal cruelty, illegal discharge, whatever...

....people who legally own their guns are by their nature "good guys" and law abiding citizens, and the only people with guns you have to be worried about are the "criminals" who own them illegally.

Kind of like the "law abiding" legal gun owner who came into my office building last week and proceeded to shoot his wife and himself.

Pretty sure if the idiot in this news story didn't have a gun, that dog would most likely still be alive.

59. Tragic and stupid. Going out on a limb here and wishing she'd have used a leash.

She put the dog out then went back into the house, leaving it alone.

There's no excuse for using a gun on this animal that I can imagine and I wish the user had been investigated and arrested for discharging a firearm.

HOWEVER, if you watch the clip, you'll see that the yard has no fence, to to release an animal into your yard and then go back into your house is negligent.

This DOES NOT excuse the act of shooting the little dog, but as the officer explained, it's a lesson in responsible animal ownership and could have and should have been prevented.

NEVER let your dog, big or small, into public without being attached to it by a leash!

Poor dog, poor girl, I hope she gets another one and doesn't repeat the mistake.

(fire away)...
