did anybody think we had sunk low enough?

Corrections Corporation of America Used in Drug Sweeps of Public School Students

In Arizona an unsettling trend appears to be underway: the use of private prison employees in law enforcement operations.
<snip>
Trick or Treat

At 9 a.m. on the morning of October 31, 2012, students at Vista Grande High School in Casa Grande were settling in to their daily routine when something unusual occurred.

Vista Grande High School Principal Tim Hamilton ordered the school -- with a student population of 1,776 -- on "lock down," kicking off the first "drug sweep" in the school's four-year history. According to Hamilton, "lock down" is a state in which, "everybody is locked in the room they are in, and nobody leaves -- nobody leaves the school, nobody comes into the school."

"Everybody is locked in, and then they bring the dogs in, and they are teamed with an administrator and go in and out of classrooms. They go to a classroom and they have the kids come out and line up against a wall. The dog goes in and they close the door behind, and then the dog does its thing, and if it gets a hit, it sits on a bag and won't move."

1. Will private schools or deregulated public schools (aka charter schools) undergo CCA drug sweeps?

Or will the use of mercenaries be used exclusively in what the 'pukes have now "memed" government schools?

The privatization of prisons and of public education brings into sharp focus the problems facing us as a country. And, where these two tears in the national fabric meet, we are gravely weakened.

2. the first time this happened to my kids in high school I FREAKED out

I was so pissed off. I wrote a LTTE to the local paper ranting about the constitution and wondering if this drug sweep with fucking DOGS would be covered in their mandatory government classes.

of course the week after someone wrote another letter saying she was glad the school was keeping her kids SAFE by doing this.

7. nah, Benson

I am in Cochise County. and I am pretty sure it was the regular cops, not contractors - they were all stiff from getting themselves a drug dog. Benson, population 5,000. yeah they needed a drug sniffing dog.

14. I've seen you give kudos to individuals -- even if they're Republican -- and events, but only...

.
.
.
... while saying those rare individuals and events break the norms for the Benson area.
.
.
I've always thought that was VERY cool of you and that they were demonstrations of
the open-mindedness our party is known for (yet fails to incorporate far too often at
the level of individuals).
.
.
.
All while knowing you understand and declare that the general area really sucks.
.
.
.
Your eloquence about that suckhood often makes me chuckle.

15. Maybe you're thinking of Bisbee.

Benson has a cool little bookstore--Singing Wind Bookshop--but, I can't think of a much else to recommend it.

10. The Az legislature this year removed the requirement for

private prisons to demonstrate their cost effectiveness.

The incarceration contract includes a minimum pay at 80% occupancy, even if the pop is 50%.
