Maher: ‘Who the f–k is Saul Alinsky?’
By Andrew Jones
Saturday, January 28, 2012 10:56 EST

At the end of his “New Rules” segment Friday evening, Bill Maher was desperate to find out who exactly was the “radical activist” Republicans love to compare to President Barack Obama.

The Real Time host requested that Republicans answer two questions when lumping civil rights advocate Saul Alinsky to the current executive chief.

“Why would you invite my outrage by suggesting such a specious link between our president and Saul Alinsky?” he asked. “And two, who the fuck is Saul Alinsky?”

Eager to find out truly who Alinsky was, Maher summed up why the likes of Newt Gingrich loved to make the comparison.

“I wikipedia’ed the guy,” he said. “Instantly, I discovered the problem: he liked black people. Way back in the 30s, he started organizing the civil rights movement. And as a historian like Newt Gingrich would tell you, the civil rights movement turned out to be a huge burden on white people...”

1. There is one good reason for Bill Maher to invite Republicans on this show.

So he can tell them to their faces how shitty they are - especially in New Rules, where he is the only one speaking.

2. This is funny to me because it exactly mirrors my experience.

I kept thinking "who the fuck is Saul Alinsky". I went to Wikipedia and the description wasn't anything like the radical communist they seem to be implying.

3. I did the same thing, reached the same conclusion

I came away with the realization that conservatives are, generally, stupid people who are easily trained and led around on leashes. They will believe ANYONE is a ravening, frothing socialist. It's like they're programmed to believe any and all such appellations. I've even successfully convinced a few that Ronald Reagan was a gibbering communist, rather than just a gibbering dumbfuck.

4. Sarah Palin, an authority on Alinsky, called

criticism of Newt Gringrich "Alinsky tactics at their worst", so I'm guessing Saul must've questioned Newt's conservatism as well.

And I'm sure your average teabagger can recant that comparison (of Obama to Alinsky) and still not know who Alinsky was.

12. No, they have a Fantasy Reagan too. Just like Supply-Side Jesus...

...they write what they want onto him and erase the inconvenient parts, so they can adore them both without pesky pangs of conflict.

Add "rewritingn history" and "cults of personality" to the list of reasons why you should address every Republican as "Comrade".

6. I like the part at the end where he compares right-wing hatred of what Obama might be thinking....

... to left-wing hatred of what Bush was actually doing.

"It didn't matter what Bush was thinking, because he wasn't."

7. Young People are receiving their news from Maher, Stewert, and Colbert

That's is why the GOP is losing that demographic the youth vote. The GOP has just Fox and right wing radio, where they just make stuff up and spew hatred. The GOP debates has proven how out of touch their base is by the booing of gay soldiers, immigrants, healthcare, and how they cheer for tax cuts for the 1%. In their minds Romney and friends pay to much tax and we need to raise the tax on poor people. How out of touch can you be?

13. That was a good rant

I loved the part where he explains that the left really had a real president (bushie) that we hated for real reasons. Not a pretend president the right has created in their bubble minds to mock Obama.

Good one!

Thanks for the tip!

21. It's a photo of Miley Ray Cyrus that's all over the internet. My son saw it somewhere before I did

and said kids were saying all kinds of the stupidest things about sex. Maher's comment was about their ignorance on the subject.

Wasn't this kid already in the news because of suggestive photos? Now I better understand Bill Maher's point, but I question the sense of whoever thought this was a good idea for a publicity photo.

20. Saul Alinsky Inspires conservatives, not Obama.

It's obvious because every conservative blogger, news channel, and website talks endlessly about Alinsky. I didn't even know who Alinsky was until Glenn Beck spent and entire year blathering on about him. Alinsky may have been a leftist, but it is conservatives who worship him.

22. BTW, Alinsky was also the subject of Hillary Clinton's Master's thesis. This was a topic in some

media during the '08 primaries. I read a few excerpts linked here. While HRC's critique of Alinsky was not negative, it also was not positive, but on balance, I'd say it was a little more negative than positive.

23. link died, but Maher's show is available as free podcasts on iTunes.

Google search Bill Maher podcasts. HBO.com has some New Rules here: http://www.hbo.com/podcasts/billmaher/podcast.xml

or the iTunes page of Maher, which has full eps in audio only format.
