Police arrest 2 teens in Ga. baby killing

Source: AP (Seattle Times)

BRUNSWICK, Ga.
Police arrested two teenagers Friday who are suspected in the shooting death of a baby in a stroller and the wounding of the baby's mother during an attempted robbery.

Seventeen-year-old De'Marquis Elkins is charged as an adult with first-degree murder, along with a 14-year-old who was not identified because he is a juvenile, Police Chief Tobe Green said.

-----------------
"He asked me for money and I said I didn't have it," she said. "When you have a baby, you spend all your money on babies. They're expensive. And he kept asking and I just said `I don't have it.' And he said, `Do you want me to kill your baby?' And I said, `No, don't kill my baby!'"
------------------------------

"The boy proceeded to go around to the stroller and he shot my baby in the face," she said. "And then he just shoved me when I started screaming and he ran down London Street with the little boy."

75. Don't believe all that you read from DUers here.

I was simply asking why she wouldn't hand over her purse, after the kid demanded it, in an attempt to save her baby.
Hanging on to purses seems to be a common way for some women getting injured or killed during robberies.
Somehow, that question has been spun into my blaming the mother.
Seems to me that there are DUers looking to spin for a fight any day.

Cheers.

40. Her other son was the attacker that time:

It's not the mother's first loss of a child to violence. West said her 18-year-old son, Shaun Glassey, was killed in New Jersey in 2008. She still has a newspaper clipping from the time.

Glassey was killed with a steak knife in March 2008 during an attack involving several other teens on a dark street corner in Gloucester County, N.J., according to news reports from the time.

"He and some other boys were going to ambush a kid," Bernie Weisenfeld, a spokesman for the Gloucester County prosecutor's office, told the AP Friday.

Glassey was armed with a knife, but the 17-year-old target of the attack was able to get the knife away from him "and Glassey ended up on the wrong end of the knife," Weisenfeld recalled.

~snip~
Her son, Shaun Glassey, 18, was stabbed with a steak knife in West Deptford in March of 2008.

Police say Glassey was the one originally carrying the knife and he had intentions to kill another teen, when his target grabbed the knife. Prosecutors never charged anyone with his death because they said it was self defense.

I believe in chain gangs for these animals. Make them work at hard public labor 5 days a week 9 hours a day, with their names on the backs of their jump suits, so all thug wanna bees will see what happens. These thugs know that, if they get a life sentence or the death penalty, they will spend time in a cell, just doing nothing, and they think that will bring them "cred". Make them do hard labor to repay the victims and the state for their crimes. See how gangsta they will be after ten years of hard labor.

make 'em work, work hard in the GA heat and make the work an absolute necessity. For example, make it so that they have to grow their own food, build theiir own shelter, make their own clothes, furniture, tools, etc. No work therefore means: no food, no place to sleep...

There are those with a complete disregard for others and their lives, but this - it's unimaginable. At least he's 17 and will be tried as an adult. I don't give him much of a chance for a long life in the prison system. Shooting a sleeping baby in the face isn't usually a popular move among the inmate population.

Last edited Sat Mar 23, 2013, 11:31 AM - Edit history (1)

These young gentlemen were but mere African-American teenagers (one of them was barely a teen). Teenagers are indeed America's treasure and we should never judge them too harshly ... or too quick.

As in virtually all cases of this nature, it is most probable that they were simply mischievous, impish, "boys being boys." Study their photographs which personifies sentiments of angelic innocence.

Please hold your personal judgement -- and wrath, until after a fair trial.

Thank you

There is absolutely nothing funny about two African-American teenagers being arrested for murder based on the chief of police's reasoning that "We checked all the schools that day. They were absent. We have to assume it was them."

Please do not laugh about, mock, taunt and show contempt for this matter until more facts are available.

The mother of the accused 17-year-old has stated to police that her son has a good heart, is a good boy, and could never do something like that.

It is doubtful that such a cherubic and angelically, sweet child could be that evil.

His face reflects a childlilke innocence which surely stimulates the maternal instincts of all women.

They will get a fair trial, but I doubt any jury will find them not guilty.

54. that concept is applied in courtrooms only

To ensure as fair a trial as possible, we set up a system so the prosecutor must prove guilt.

It has absolutly nothing to do with people talking and speculating about guilt or innocence.

79. I'm curious whether they have HARD evidence that the two teens

did it, or whether the cops just went out and rounded up the nearest two kids with brown skin and no alibi.

And are they certain the mom didn't kill her own child and then try to blame anonymous kids??

Not trolling or flamebaiting here. I have just watched a few too many true crime shows lately where the real killer tried to blame anonymous black folks.

80. Another regularly scheduled teaching moment...

...in the Excited States of America.

What will you do with it, this time? Same as usual? Spend a week or two fretting about the victims and the perpetrators; get jiggy with each other about the proper punishment for the 'bad' guys and then sit back, satisfied that the Criminal Justice Industry will make it all better.

Here's a suggestion. If curbing violence in the society is in the public interest, and as democratic activists you see some personal responsibility to act in this pursuit, it would seem your time could be better spent doing something other than jumping around, waving your arms and 'doubling down' on every righteous principal you ever held.

We had an high school exercise, in the 70's where we would calm the raging hormones of all the 'intellectual alpha dogs' in the room by forming small groups, and have them all work on the same question. Class discussion would center around the group decisions where extraneous crazy talk had already been dismissed as 'irrelevant' or non-productive.

The question of discovering the causes of violence in our society and the methods and principles we use to eliminate it deserve more attention than we seem to be able to give. Rather than violently expressing ones outrage at the outrageous violence of another, why don't you get into groups and present a consensus opinion of why is there such violence in our society. Use 'current events' as a source.

.

88. Some thoughts

1. Lets wait for the evidence against the two teens. Too often in the past it was grab the first convenient black face.
2. Can the mother be excluded (or at least determined to not have fired the bullets which hit her).
3. Is it possible that the mothers story is covering up her involvement in a crime (not the far more important crime of killing the child, but there was a case in Nashville years ago in which a dad went to a drug buy with his kid in the back seat - it did not go well and the kid was shot and killed - that is still capital murder for the shooter, but it makes the shooter a little less cold blooded).

If it is as the mother stated, then I see no redemption for the shooter. It will be a lifetime of incarceration. No parole ever. Even on this pretty liberal board, you will find very few that would be comfortable with extending parole even 40 years later for something like this.

It appears that the 17 year old has an alibi. His aunt was serving him breakfast. Could you imagine lying like this to cover up such a crime (if she is lying). If the alibi is cracked, I hope the aunt is prosecuted to the fullest extent as well.

92. It is a pretty good alibi

It could come down to the aunt's credibility versus the other eyewitness testimony (especially that of the possible 14 year old accomplice - he probably gets deal to testify against the 17 year old - that combined with a positive ID by the mother would be enough to trump the aunt's alibi and put her truthfulness into question). Tying the gun (if it is found) to the 17 year old would also do it.

90. I hope the police first vet the only eye wittnesses story.

I don't think anyone else has come foward noticing these youths in the area. Perhaps local stores have video? The kids were on foot, a long distance from home? did noone else in car or home, notice 2 youths on the move?

I hope their police get a very firm case, something like gun res. on the shooters hands. If there is no gun res. on the kids hands and no other wittnesses placing them there...I don't think they should take the Moms word for it on the ID off police prepared photo spread. Not that she is outright lying (though that has happened before).

95. Parental responsibility...

Particularly if there is a minor who is a perpetrator, both of the child's parents (or guardian) - even if there is no "dad in the picture," should have liability.

If your minor child commits a crime and is convicted, I believe you failed as a parent and should be liable, particularly if no mental illness or physical issue is involved.
