Panetta: Army should release cop killer's records

SANTA CRUZ, Calif. (AP) Former Defense Secretary Leon Panetta says the military should release court-martial records of a former soldier who shot and killed two Santa Cruz police detectives.

Jeremy Goulet was a helicopter pilot in Hawaii in 2006 when the Army court-martialed him on charges of raping two women.

The charges were later dropped in exchange for an "other than honorable" discharge in 2007. It's not clear why, and the military records are not public.

Goulet faced multiple criminal charges in several states in the following years. On Feb. 26, 2013 he was killed in a shootout after he gunned down two police detectives.

Isn't this like closing the barn door after the horse gets out?

The man is dead, how does releasing his court-martial records now, help?

2. That, and...what connection does Panetta have to this case? I can't figure that one out.

He's not SecDef anymore, and wasn't SecDef when this guy committed his alleged rapes.

3. Panetta represented Santa Cruz in the US House from 77 to 93.

His district included the Monterey Bay and Central Coast.

4. Nearest I can figure is that he might live in the area

as he used to be a congressman from Monterey.
