Carrie Fisher confirms she will return as Princess Leia in new Star Wars

Source: Courier Mail

In an interview with Palm Beach Illustrated the actress jokingly replied to a question about the iconic character's age: "Elderly. She's in an intergalactic old folks home."

When asked if she can confirm her appearance in the upcoming Star Wars Episode VII, she simply replied "yes". " I just think she would be just like she was before, only slower and less inclined to be up for the big battle," Fisher said.

Would she still wear the bagel buns? "The bagel buns and the bikini, because probably she has sundowners syndrome," Fisher quipped. "At sundown, she thinks that she's 20-something. And she puts it on and gets institutionalised."

Harrison Ford also has confirmed he will return as an older - though doubtfully wiser - Han Solo. Only one of the original trio of stars has yet to comment on a return to the silver screen: Mark Hamill, who played the young Luke Skywalker.

6. Pity they didn't make these sequels 20 years ago

when the cast could have still easily pulled off action.

and before Lucas went batshit insane and created the prequels.

That said, old Carrie Fisher is still Carrie Fisher, and therefore awesome, so I'll watch.

14. This will one of the longest stretches for a sequel

Return of the Jedi - 1983
Star Wars 7 - 2015
32 years

Some reference points:

The Hustler/Color of Money 25 years

It is very difficult to find a serious sequel that long after the original. No the prequels are not sequels. Besides Color of Money I can't find a good sequel in this range.

My criteria is many of the principles return to their role and advance the story in their lives (like seeing Bud Fox now as cynical as Gecko)

Maltese Falcon/The Black Bird 34 years (lousy sequel and no Bogart)
Odd Couple/Odd Couple II 30 years (lousy sequel)
Tron/Legacy 28 years (neither very good movies)
Psycho/Psycho II 23 years (weak sequel)
Wall Street/Money Never Sleeps 23 years (weak sequel)

Any others?

For pioneering reasons alone it should be acknowledged but I like the storyline quite a bit. It is really nerdy and technical but that doesn't make it a bad film.

But to your point, I still haven't seen the sequel.

Of course she's going to be there and so too will Mark Hamill. I think Hamill might be looking for a multi-film deal. Solo is almost certainly one and done, Lea can go either way but Luke being a central character over this trilogy is definitely doable and more than likely.

I'm excited about Star Wars again.

It's time for a younger Star Wars cast as was done in the Star Trek franchise. Also, it needs 3D effects*** (post-processed or as was used in "Avatar"). Won't make it otherwise.

***
With the increase of films released in 3D, 2D to 3D conversion has become more common. The majority of non-CGI stereo 3D blockbusters are converted fully or at least partially from 2D footage. Even Avatar contains several scenes shot in 2D and converted to stereo in post-production. The reasons for shooting in 2D instead of stereo are financial, technical and sometimes artistic.

53. Bottom Line: Box Office Ticket & DVD Sales

The new Star Trek franchise very likely beats most if not all its ancestors in that dept. I'll get you a source for that info shortly. Remember how that last Star Trek with the original Kirk et al failed miserably at the Box Office? That was the one where they were singing around a campfire in one scene. That's how I remember it at this time. Of course, you are entitled to your opinion and that's fine.

was Star Trek VI (not counting Generations) and as I can remember it was a hit. The recent Star Trek movie made more than Star Trek IV and First Contact adjusted for inflation? I didn't know that. Btw is your name in reference to House Harkonnen from Dune? I looooove those books and all of the film interpretations. My favorite is the 2000 mini series.

and if Star Wars is going to go without that, it will very likely fail...especially with if the movie is cast with what's left of the original "crew."

many of the stereo 3D effects in Avatar were extremely fine tuned. Even when other films have used stereo cameras, the effect did not always turn out as well.

36. Now there is a shock. OF COURSE anyone who is asked shall return.

Even the estates of those who have died are probably begging Disney to allow holograms of the person in the new Star Wars.

All will be getting 100s of millions of dollars.

Who in their right mind would not?

Probably the only one not coming back would be Jar Jar himself.
Not even if Jar Jar paid Disney a billion to be in it.

And I bet every actor/actress in the world is sending in photos and bio to be in it.

Because as the smallest character in the first movie found out, being in Star Wars is immortality on the later sci-fi convention show circuit.

Anybody ever hear of Boba Fett when the first movie came out?
I didn't think so.
He became a legend through the years as has every other person, costumed or not.

$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

Besides, it will be their character's kids that are the focus of the following ones
so they shall be in it.

Mark Hamill though is such a drama queen. Waiting for his entrance.
I'm ready for my close up Mr. DeMille.

Will Norma Desmond be called back to life too?

Anyone with a SAG card should be allowed to act in it.
They would be able to retire from one bit part in it.
It is an actors dream come true.

I would think that Harrison Ford would have been the hardest one to snag being the only A-lister...

Was in high school when Star Wars came out and saw it 10 times in the movies. I hope that one day, Disney will actually restore the original, uncut, un-Lucas-ized version (with Jabba the Hutt as a human and all the Anchorhead scenes re-inserted), and release that.

52. Age has not been particularly kind to Mark Hamill

While he still has an active career as a voice actor, Hamill hasn't done much on-camera work in more than a decade. Just the occasional guest spot now and then. It's my understanding that he's made comments saying that he's not that interested in on-camera acting anymore, and actually prefers his voice roles. Of course, a new Star Wars film could change his opinion on that.

Truthfully, Yoda wasn't all that good looking either. I could see a wise and stately Skywalker as the elderly but still formidable Grand Master of the Jedi High Council. He wouldn't be as cool as Yoda, but those are impossibly large shoes to fill for any actor.

50. I wouldn't mind it.

My sister took me to see the original in December '77; I was just shy of 12 years old and I thought, "WOW!"

Carrie was one of my first crushes...I remember her like this:

Now, knowing what she's been through in her personal life (mental illness, substance abuse - she was drugged-out for much of the original trilogy), I have a hell of a lot of respect for her. I am a recovering alcoholic (decade-plus clean) and struggle daily with PTSD and severe depression. I also like her caustic wit.

Harrison Ford may get his wish to have Han Solo killed off after all - he wanted to do that after The Empire Strikes Back. Maybe General Solo will die heroically.

I don't think Lucas was completely batshit with the prequels. There were some bad ideas (Jar Jar Binks) and some good ones (Natalie Portman). The first prequel was kind of "huh?," the second was a romance flick - I mean, the future Dark Lord of the Sith being google-eyed over a GIRL (though when that GIRL was Natalie Portman, "Lord Vader" can be excused!)? - and the third ranks right up there with The Empire Strikes Back as my favourite.

Carrie might well be able to carry (ouch!) the role of Prime Minister (?) Leia Skywalker Organa Solo quite well; I can see her as an older, dignified woman carrying (ouch again!) herself quite regally.

Mark Hamill - not sure. Not to be brutal, but the first film really focussed on Luke, but it was Harrison Ford who became the bigger star/boxoffice draw. I only saw two other films Hamill did (Corvette Summer and The Big Red One); I'm not sure if he's done much else besides voice-overs. Maybe he could reinvent Luke as a wise Jedi teacher in the mould of Qui-Gon Jinn - after all, he'd have nephews and nieces to train!

What about the following, though:

Peter Mayhew? What would Solo be without Chewbacca at his side?

Tony Daniels and Kenny Baker? The droids are an integral part of all the films.

Billy Dee Williams? Even older, Lando Calrissian would still be the ultimate-slick con man.

Ian McDiarmid? If Obi-Wan Kenobi, Yoda and Anakin Skywalker can appear through the Force, shouldn't Emperor Palpatine have a similar ability?

It is unfortunate that there probably isn't a way to write Governor Tarkin into the script. Peter Cushing played him wonderfully - my favourite bad guy of the films.

Of course, all this is just idle speculation.

Senator Bail Organa was Viceroy of Alderaan, a constitutional monarchy. The novelisation of the first film goes into more detail about this than the movies do.

Of course, Leia Skywalker Organa Solo's true father was Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader.

In the Expanded Universe, which are sanctioned by Lucasfilm, she is still referred to as "Your Highness," even though her parentage has become known. Maybe it's honorary, since Bail Organa was one of the architects of the Rebel Alliance.

In a couple of the novels, Darth Vader's former assassins, the Noghri, call her "Lady Vader."

64. "Wishful Drinking"

Her hysterically brilliant & funny one-woman stage show which had successful runs on Broadway and stages in other cities and aired on HBO.....her Princess Leia segment was tears running down my face I was laughing so hard.....totally brilliant. I'm looking forward to the comedy that she'll take from this -- love the way this woman's mind works!
