McCain Goes After NBC Host For Questioning GOP’s Benghazi Conspiracy Theories

Source: ThinkProgress

By Zack Beauchamp on Feb 17, 2013 at 11:49 am

Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) levied a series of wild accuastions Sunday morning when discussing the attack on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi last September, accusing the Obama Administration of perpetrating a “massive coverup” and NBC’s David Gregory of not caring about the death of American diplomats.

McCain’s outburst came after Gregory asked McCain what, exactly, the Administration was covering up. Taking umbrage at Gregory’s skepticism, the Arizona senator grew confrontational:

70. MSM too lazy

to set the agenda. That would take some intelligence and energy so they set their sights on blowhards and bs'rs like McCain, knowing what his response will be to certain questions on certain topics. Like manipulating the puppet strings. Meanwhile the real important issues are ignored because they may have less entertainment value and may tend towards the boring. The question is what the purpose of the MSM is, and if they're just entertainers what educates the electorate.

88. The main stream media has nothing to do with it...

...wasn't he ARGUING with the "main stream media"? You think he'd get asked a question like that on Fox?

Don't distract from the point of the clip by carrying on about an irrelevant sidelight.

I dislike McCain intensely for the way he acted 5 years ago during the campaigns, and elevating Palin to right-wing deity status, but he is one of the leaders of the other party. Putting him on like that shows the ineptitude of their party, and I'm happy when he goes on the "main stream media" and exposes himself and the republicans for what they are.

19. This Benghazi thing

As far as I can tell, this obsession with Benghazi seems to be born of a belief that, if only "the American people" would see it as a "terrorist attack," it would scuttle Obama and would have paved the way for Romney to win. Of course, it never gained any traction during the election because nobody really cared whether it was or not. And, as Clinton told them during the embarrassing "made for TV" fiasco with The Romper Room, it doesn't really matter.

But the GOP still clings to their bubble-born and bankrupt theory that, if Obama has a "terrorist attack" on his watch, it will somehow make him indistinguishable from the repeated failures of the GOP, especially he Bush cabal, when it comes to national defense and, thereby, weaken him politically. His reelection proves the theory is bogus, but they just keep hammering away because they're in their own little bubble of a belief system.

32. My question about the Benghazi matter is why the Turkish

and American ambassadors were meeting at the American CONSULATE in Benghazi when Tripoli is the capital of Libya and surely the EMBASSIES were in Tripoli not in Benghazi. Was it just to accommodate someone's vacation plans? That seems a bit absurd since it looks like our ambassador traveled to that consulate for some reason possibly associated with his meeting with the Turkish ambassador. Some have suggested an exchange of prisoners or something. What really happened?

I don't think this was the scandal that the Republicans want us to think it is, but we should be told the whole truth, and I don't think that is the case.

Also, I think that our ambassador to the United Nations should have been better informed.

But Hillary Clinton and Obama announced in their first remarks on the day after the attack that it was a heavily armed attack. There was confusion in the minds of those who followed the announcements carefully about whether the attack in Benghazi was, like attacks elsewhere, associated with protests against the inflammatory film.

That was not, in my opinion, intentional. And we were shown video of the events at the consulate which left no doubt that the attackers had at least one big gun and were very well organized.

The only reason the Republicans did not know it was an attack was because they weren't listening to the statements of Clinton and Obama on the day after the attack and they did not watch the video when it became available shortly after the attack.

It is very sad that our ambassador was assassinated, but this is a lot of noise over nothing. And this is nothing comparable to the attack on our Beirut Embassy during the Reagan presidency.

58. yeah, *something* was going on in Benghazi that involved a large CIA presense

I tend to think all these repukes know what it is, and know that they can't reveal it, but are frustrated because either A) they truly don't like the operation, or B) the think it would hurt the President if the American people actually knew what the operation is/was.

I've been amazed from the day of the attack about how openly willing they have been to, in essence, criticize the CIA (because that's who had security teams in the city, and for that matter, the CIA was attacked directly in the second half of the attack that night). They seem to have no fear of reprisal... I rather hope they are wrong about that and the CIA hits back.

64. I think the CIA continued its torture program there.

And the GOP are pushing the coverup meme because they know the Obama administration won't reveal the continuation of the torture program that started under the Bush administration.

Furthermore, one of the WikiLeaks cables tells of a meeting between McCain, Lieberman, and Graham with Quaddafi, where the Three Amigos brokered a deal whereby Quaddafi would receive arms for being strong on terrorism.

I think they're pissed because the deal got fucked up.

It was the first thought that crossed my mind when the attack occurred. Horrible thought, but then we are thinking about Republicans -- you know, the ones who started the Iraq War for no reason at all. I am increasingly inclined to believe very truly that they are capable of any horror. So, your theory is possible.

Sorry to be so partisan. But Hubris reminded me of all my reasons to distrust Republicans.

Is what role, if any, were the CIA involved with in Benghazi, were they the true target of the attack and did they then not have a vested interested in the talking points funneled to Susan Rice. What Hillary Clinton was saying has stood up to the test of time far more than the CIA cleared message delivered by Susan Rice. One other thing, I saw a report that said that the Consulate building in Benghazi only had one way out, the front door that was blocked by both fire and gun fire, so those inside died of smoke inhalation rather than hostile fire.

Really, stop inviting him to expose his anger. We already know!

51. McCain's defensiveness tells us all

He has nothing. Just his wiled eyed partisan fantasies.. Unlike the fantasies of Lindsey Graham and bad boy , bull dog, Ted Cruz . McCan has an excuse.. Old age and Alzheimer's.

Such a waste of time and effort on all sides when there are so many far more critical issues that need addressing.

54. The best day in my John McCain world

The best day in my John McCain world would be the day that no one calls him or takes him up on the offer to appear on their Sunday talk show. He will feel lost and alone...

56. Nobody gives a shit about Benghazi except for Republicans playing politics

McCain doesn't care about the deaths, he just wants to score political points like the rest of the GOP.

57. First time Gregory's shown any spine in a long time.

McCain is batshit crazy. The real coverup is the lies that led into Iraq. McCain is just "mirroring" what we all know to be true. Republicans lied us into an illegal war that killed and injured half a million people. This distraction on his part is an attempt to deflect from that issue and create a parallel issue that the public would equate with Iraq. This sick bastard knows what he's doing. He needs to be put on trial for war crimes with the rest of the NeoCons and Bush admin. It's past time to punish these fucknuts.

would just stop inviting him on shows. Even better, we need to put him on a deserted island all by himself.

73. Time To Give This Up

As far as I know Congress, especially, Republicans have gotten more information about the Bengahzi attacks from the Obama Administration than Congress got about 9/11 from the Bush Administration. In addition, the information received from the Obama Administration was given with much less prodding. The only other thing Republicans can ask the Obama Administration to do is to present President Obama and Vice President Biden before the proper committees to discuss what happened the night the embassy in Bengahzi was attacked.

76. Note to McCain: What about 9/11?

Were those who ignored warnings held accountable? Over 3,000 Americans died because of their negligence. Did you, personally, Senator McCain go after pResident Bush, VP Cheney, Rice, Rumsfeld for their negligence?

No, you did not. So why now? What is different this time? In sheer numbers, 9/11 beats out Benghazi big time. Are some lives more important than others, or are you still bearing a childish grudge against President Obama for winning in 2008?

Barack Obama was the far better candidate for the job, and you continue to prove that every time you open your silly mouth. Shut up and retire, it's time.

Wasn't he incensed when he discovered that Iraq was not the source of the anthrax but instead was domestic?

77. BenGhazi Ad Nauseum, Why?

Let me clear the whole thing up. it's not about BenGhazi. It's about Hillary Clinton and the 2016 elections. If there is one nightmare in the GOP it is Hillarys' 2016 campaign for President, even though she hasn't shown any intention to run.

They are terrified of Hillary. She is a cruise missile into the heart of the Elephant. They need to dig something up about her service as Secretary of State during the BenGhazi incident that would damage her chances during the 2016 elections.

Whether there is anything there or not, BenGhazi will be a constant drone coming from the GOPs' noise machine. Another example of repeating a lie to make it the truth.

That's it in a nutshell. Smile every time you hear BenGhazi coming from a Republican, because it's an indication of exactly how desperate they have become, and how small their mentality.

Little people running around in circles screaming "BenGhazi, BenGhaz, please report to the Republican Noise machine".

78. I'd hardly call McCains comments an outburst

or confrontational. Having said that, the GOP always gets defensive when asked any kind of hard question. Also the MSM rarely mentions the incident took place at a CIA outpost not an Embassy. I'm sure the level of State Department monitoring is different where those things are concerned.

80. How many did John McSame and Bush kill with the lies they told...

About Iraq?

Socked I tell you, by David "the Sock Monkey" Gregory probing old Johnny McSame for one honest answer and McSame responding with total and instantaneous rude rage. A highly televised three year oldish temper tantrum, exposes the extent of old Johnny's second child-hoodedness. Take a cup of prunes 3 times a day brother John and get with it! John's picture belongs in the dictionary next to the word bitter. Reality must seem way off in the foggy, unattainable, distance, to a troubled mind like Mc-Cain's.

82. Deductive thought only works when used properly

Forming a conclusion, that there's a Benghazi conspiracy, then seeking out evidence to support that theory is not Deductive Thought. In this instance, it just makes the perpetrator appear to be an angry old white man.

FAIL!

I didn't hear him say one word against BushCo during that war, from all the trumped up reasons to go to war through the entire episode.

What a f-ing phony.
