Duff Goldman, 'Ace Of Cakes' Chef, Offers To Bake Rejected Lesbian Couple's Wedding Cake For Free

Source: Huffington Post

Things might soon be looking up for the lesbian brides-to-be who were denied a wedding cake by an Oregon bakery.

In the wake of the incident, Baltimore-based pastry chef and "Ace of Cakes" star Duff Goldman is sending out an open offer to the couple (whose names have not been released) saying he'll bake and transport their wedding cake completely free of charge.

The executive chef of the Baltimore-based Charm City Cakes told HuffPost Live, "I saw this story and I was like, “Wait -- I can do something, there’s injustice involving a cake!”

Noting that Charm City has been making same-sex wedding cakes for some time, Goldman added, "For a cake decorator to really feel like he really needed to take a stand…it just makes absolutely no sense. It’s petty, it’s small…this man has wrapped up his hatred in the cloak of religion.”

60. Me too, it was a wonderful line.

There was an article up on my local station over here in Central Oregon, where the bigot owner says that due to his taking a stand, his sales are simply booming, new customers buying things just to show support, blah, blah.

I doubt it, or so, may the uptick be as brief for him as it was for Chick Fil A.

I live in Portland and I would not consider Gresham part of the metro area. If you look at the vote-distribution from the last election you'll see that outside the metro areas Oregon is a red state. Especially eastern Oregon.

51. Outside of Portland and Eugene Oregon goes a frightening shade of red...

Portland is the largest city in Oregon and counters the FauxNewz imbibing population of the rest of state when it comes to presidential elections, but do remember that Oregon also failed to vote in same-sex marriage when it was on our ballot. I think too many people took it for granted that since Oregon is a liberal state it would pass, allowing the reich-wing voters to gain the upper hand.

When I heard the story initially I was like "WFT?!? This guy baking a cake for someone is commission work, he isn't endorsing anything by baking a cake."

On the other hand, as a private business, he has the right to refuse service...and all the gay customers he claims to serve I suspect will now go elsewhere.

Duff *ROCKS*!!!

The bakery that turned the couple down will probably live to regret what they did. Real justice would be if lesbians create a bakery and run the bigot bakery out of business.

What a wonderful way to send love to the couple and publicly berate the assinine bakery. We are very liberal up here in the PNW, but when the conservatives lash out, and they are batshit up in these parts, they manage to look ridiculous.

23. Way to go Duff!

...you are the man.

I SURE hope this gets filmed for a TV show.

p.s.....in case everyone does not read the article:

"As KATU first reported, Sweet Cakes Bakery owner Aaron Klein admitted he denied one of the women service after she visited his shop on Jan. 17.

"I believe that marriage is a religious institution ordained by God," Klein, who owns the bakery with his wife Melissa, is quoted as saying. Specifying that he does not consider himself to be anti-gay -- "I'll sell stuff...I'll talk to them, it's fine" -- Klein also noted, "I'd rather have my kids see their dad stand up for what he believes in then to see him bow down because one person complained."
(...I have to add my own personal comment here...he's gonna stand up for his beliefs and not "bow down" because of a complaint? WELL, good luck with that and keeping in business, if you are gonna always be standing on your "beliefs"!)

Them:

enough money from being on tv and charging $1,000 minimum to make a cake, he didn't need my money. I'd never buy ready made fondant, it's expensive and if his is like the 'other' brand, it tastes awful. I was thinking more of buying the small stuff like luster dust or maybe a can of spray coloring stuff for when I don't feel like dragging out the air brush, lol.

is that there are a lot of assholes out there, but this asshole, the baker that thinks God wants him to be mean to gays, must go to a church somewhere. I would love to find out what his pastor or minister thinks about his un-Christian attitude.

43. His pastor probably thinks the same thing

about gays and lesbians and marriage equality as this idiot. From the little I read about this incident last night, the "complaint" was a letter from the state about his refusing to provide these ladies with a cake. Washington's anti-discrimination law includes sexual orientation and provides that the law covers companies offering public accomodation, so the old "but he runs a private company and can do what he likes" may not cover him since his bakery sells goods and services to the general public. It will be interesting to see how it turns out.

45. Wow! Hope they take him up on the offer. They seem like a great crew.

We priced out my daughter's 16th birthday cake there - minimum cost of a custom cake was $1000, plus delivery.

We should have scheduled a tasting though! They actually charge for them (saying it will be put toward your order if you go with them). It would have been memorable. I didn't think of that until my friend actually ordered her daughter's cake from there. She wouldn't say how much she paid for it, but I bet it was closer to $2K. She didn't pick anything pretty but it was meaningful for her - a copy of the Blarney Stone. It looked like a big gray rock sitting on icing grass, but they even rolled sugar sparkles into the icing layer so it glittered like rock w/ mica in it. I guess the special part was that it was 5 layers with each one being a different flavor.

BTW, we ended up getting a cake with black/white cow spots on it from our favorite townie bakery. Daughter wanted raspberry filling because it's her favorite flavor. But, when you cut into it ---- yeah.... Her party was at a rodeo and a family owned eatery near Cowtown Rodeo, NJ. Cost of awesome custom cake was $37.00.

Goldman was also recently tapped to prep the cake for Barack Obama's second inauguration Jan. 21, according to ABC.

Interesting.. I didn't know this..

Did a baker break the law when he denied service to same-sex couple?"

We asked Portland attorney Paula Barran whether this case falls under the 2007 statute. She said it did, but added that she did not know how the owner’s religious beliefs would factor in.

“Statutes don’t get to overcome constitutional protections, so if somebody had a religious-based reason for wanting not to trade with somebody, I think you have a really interesting test case for whether or not a statute like this can apply,” Barran said.

There is no exception under the state's anti-discrimination law for religious beliefs. Ultimately, the case would be up for a judge to decide.
