Gov. Bobby Jindalís Administration Reverses Planned Elimination of Medicaid Hospice Program

Source: Washington Post

BATON ROUGE, La. ó Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindalís administration scrapped plans Wednesday to shutter the stateís Medicaid hospice program in February, meaning the state will continue to provide end-of-life care to people on their death beds who canít afford private insurance.

Jindalís health secretary Bruce Greenstein made the announcement as hospice program supporters were gathering for a candlelight vigil on the state capitol steps to protest the cut. Greenstein said his department will use grant funding to cover the hospice costs this year.

Cheers went up across the small crowd of people gathered in what they expected to be a somber vigil. Instead, they celebrated.

ďI got goose bumps,Ē certified grief counselor and nurse Sue deRada said as she heard the program for the terminally ill would be spared.

24. Excellent point.

Gov. Bobby Jindal's latest budget cuts are shrinking the amount spent on shelters that take in battered women and other agencies to prevent domestic violence. The reductions were made to help close a $166 million midyear budget deficit. The Advocate reported that money for family violence prevention and intervention programs was cut by more than $998,000, a 16 percent drop in the amount spent on contracts the state holds with shelters and other domestic violence programs.

http://www.americanpress.com/State-budget-cuts-hit-domestic-violence-programs

He's trying to push this through unnoticed.

If there's no outcry, women will once again bear the cross for the repukes' sins. If you like a religious spin to it.

Hmmmmm....let me guess. Think there'll be an outcry? Yeah, right. That might happen. It's only women's life or death.........

Who desperately need safe shelters in order to be ABLE to leave abusive partners. Not to mention the counseling and childcare needed. And hospital care....etc.

But no, no one except us --and the Rude Pundit-- seems to be aware of it.

37. yes absolutely!

It's funny how the Rude One is so...rude. Some people accuse him of being sexist because of it but I think they mistake vulgarity for sexism.

Aside from specifically feminist analysts, he's actually one of the few social critics who seem to remember that women actually exist! And he considers impacts on women pretty much as they occur; not like most other pundits who only seem to remember that women exist when something so egregious happens that they can't ignore it.

Okay, enough ranting......
This Jindal idiot--people need to fight back!
That's part of what Prez Obama means when he reminds us that we have to make things happen...imo, anyway.

Washington Post, Atlanta Journal, etc..

If they are reporting the reversal of the medicaid budget cuts, I point out he is still slashing funding to victims of domestic abuse. Just as cruel, but with all the attention paid to the hospice funding, these cuts are getting overlooked.

I don't know his backstory...

I know some of these pricks come from a hard life and are full of resentment that they want to take out on other people (kick them while they're down, or something)

Others come from such a sheltered life that they have no connection.

and others are just sociopaths and narcissists.

1/23/2013
Louisiana's Jindal to Abused Women and the Dying: Drop Dead:
When you live in Louisiana, you get used to a certain amount of Neanderthal savagery and brute stupidity. Sure, the education system is getting fucked beyond fucked and the state legislature thinks it's just jim-fuckin' dandy to teach that everything was created when an invisible sky wizard puked it all out, but, hey, how about that food? Sure, sex education is pretty much non-existent in a state where they have the most restrictive abortion laws in the nation, but, man, ain't that band playin' some hot zydeco? See? It's a trade-off. A state with a high sales tax, including taxes on food and clothing, lottery, and gambling, along with a state income tax, can't stay out of the red because tax cuts for rich people are so fucking important, so why not raise the sales tax even higher? It's what you get for wanting to laissez les bon temps rouler.

7. Apparently somebody with real medical knowledge got through to him

Maybe they took my advice about grabbing him by the tie and not letting him go until the truth sank in, that hospice is the cheapest way to go, far cheaper than putting people into hospitals or nursing homes for their last weeks or months.

I would hope all these cheapass, citizen hating Republicans would have a few doctors with access to explain a few facts to them when they do things that are really, really stupid.

8. Only hospitals and nursing homes would support ending Medicaid hospice,

since it would force all terminally ill Medicaid patient to go into the hospital or nursing home to get palliative care at the end of life--at a massively inflated price that tax payers would have paid. Jindal must have gotten a ton of money from either hospitals or nursing homes to make his original decision.

43. Hospice organizations come to nursing homes.

Here is some information regarding Hospice funding:

http://www.hospicepatients.org/hospic48.html

From the page above:

"No Need to Ever Pay Privately for Hospice Services

Whether or not your loved one has Medicare, Medicaid or private insurance, you should never have to pay out of your own pocket for hospice covered services. If a hospice asks you to pay for private duty nursing out of your own pocket when there are uncontrolled symptoms, when you already have Medicare, Medicaid or private insurance, it is very likely committing health care fraud illegally! It is important that you report this to your regional U.S. Office of Inspector General and U.S. Attorney's office. Double-billing is a very real and despicable scam committed by rogue hospices taking advantage of the dying. Don't let this happen to you!

Charitable Provision of Hospice Services

If you do not have any coverage by Medicare, Medicaid or private insurance, a nonprofit hospice can provide services to you FREE OF CHARGE as part of its charitable mission. The nonprofit status of the hospice often requires it to provide charitable services. Find a larger nonprofit hospice if you have no coverage; the nonprofit hospices are dedicated to the mission of serving those in need."

My mother is living in a nursing home at the present time (she is not on hospice). I have seen people with various hospice name tags coming and going on the elevators when I visit her.

How could anyone be a) so stupid, b) so heartless, and c) so dangerous! Where in god's name would these people go?

I sure would like to know who's responsible for turning the tide on this fiasco. Was it the Catholic nuns and bishops? LA is very catholic. Was it the medical establishment? Or was it the GOP bosses, who recognized what a disasterous train wreck it would be for the party?

19. This is why.

Because earlier today somebody posted that Hospice costs $140 a day for medicaid hospice care, and that removing hospice care meant that many of those folks will instead go into hospital ER's, and linger for a few days, and run up the bills much higher.

That is the only reason Jindal is even considering it until the end of the fiscal year. They think it's much cheaper to let them die in Hospice care rather than a hospital.

*(Which is correct- it is.)

21. Oh my God, these people are nothing but evil.

I'm so upset I can hardly see straight, much less get a legible post out. I don't wish ill will or harm to anyone, but right now I can't even think of a punishment bad enough for Jindal for even letting this thought cross his mind, much less planning to put it in place. Yeah, I know, I know. Sounds like the thought police, but anyone who has been through a long illness, followed by the death of someone they love knows what I'm talking about. Hospice workers are angels on earth. My husband's last days would have been an absolute nightmare if we didn't have access (through Medicare) to hospice. ALL his pain-killers, any device, any service, ANYTHING he needed was provided without charge what-so-ever. Those nurses would have been there everyday, all day if we needed them. They were amazing...I don't know how they do the work they do. But I guess the knowledge that they're making the very bad inevitable as painless as possible for everyone involved helps them deal with it. Even after Mike passed, they were there for me; calling me to check and see how I was, letting me know about support groups...they were wonderful. It's been 2 1/2 years now, and I still get calls and letters from them.

And that no good son of a bitch wanted to take this kind of care away from dying people to avoid raising taxes on the very wealthy. I can't really express my disgust. This should be on every newscast in the country. I knew these people were heartless, evil bastards, but this is beyond the pale.

It allows dying people the opportunity to die at home with their loved ones around them and is far more cost effective than having people die in a hospital bed.
