Yes, it was a joke by Supreme Court's Thomas

Source: Reuters

When Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas broke his nearly seven-year silence during oral arguments last week, there was much speculation about what exactly he said. Just four cryptic words appeared in the court's unofficial transcript.

Now it can be told: It was nine words and apparently a joke.

The court on Wednesday issued a revised transcript that suggests Thomas, a graduate of Yale Law School, uttered a light-hearted jest about a lawyer who once attended his alma mater's archrival, Harvard.

<snip>

Regardless, the revised transcript shows that Thomas did not ask a question. He has not asked one from the bench since a February 22, 2006, oral argument. That streak continues.

Which, of course, you can't unless you simply say two eyes, one nose, one mouth, etc. Other than that people react to other people and the way they look.

33. Not always

How do you react to someone who is homeless and filthy and obviously has mental issues?

Some will react with disgust while others will feel a great deal of sympathy. Some will act as if they don't see the person because there is no person there in their estimation. Others will try to give some change or even some item of clothing.

If you think that's shallow then what are you when you react to someone like that? Because if you have no reaction then there's something missing in you.

35. Should have been more clear

and perhaps "react" was too general. Shallow people make decisions about other people based on their appearance - i.e. on their "soulless eyes."

If a filthy, mentally disturbed homeless person engages me, I am going to walk away, but that's not because of the way he looks - it's because I, unlike him, am not mentally disturbed and I am aware that I do not have the training or resources to help said man.

I worked for DHS for a good many years, with mentally disturbed adults and children. You don't know me, and that's your loss. Nothing missing here - except patience for fucking idiots.

You are calling me shallow for saying a person has soulless eyes?

Did you not read my reply to the original remark?

Soulless eyes have nothing to do with physical appearance. It's a term that denotes a lack of soul (soulless, get it?), an emptiness INSIDE.

Read AND COMPREHEND before you start name-calling and pointing fingers.

you know the person through his public persona. If I were to show you random pictures of people you wouldn't be able to pick out the 'soulless' republicans from the democrats.

I work in UC Berkeley, so I know about all good universities. As a matter of fact there are people in President Obama's administration that are form here and people who were in Clinton's administration who now work here. We also have John Woo here, so it's not all great. But I also know that Yale and Harvard are excellent private Universities. What exactly do you have against them?

22. Can we just buy him a new motor home and get him to leave.....really.

“There’s not much that entices about the job,” Thomas said, answering questions from the public that provided a rare glimpse of the man behind the office. “There’s no money in it, no privacy, no big houses, and from an ego standpoint, it does nothing for me.”

Thomas, 59, said the position is satisfying because he feels he’s serving the public, and he’s honored by it, “but I wouldn’t say I like it.”

“I like sports,” Thomas said. “I like to drive a motor home.”

37. You know why don't you? He was raised Gullah - which has its own language

and he was made fun of when he moved to the mainland. He said he hardly spoke after that due to being bullied about it.

Now, that does not excuse the hell he drug Anita Hill through, but it does explain his silence and letting his wife make all his phone calls.

"Gullah also known as Geechee." I seem to remember the word "geechee" in a movie.
It was something about a black army group during WWII, someone was murdered and a black sergeant used the term in reference to another black enlisted man. Anyone know the movie?

I've been wracking my brain since I posted that.

I tried finding it on IMDB by looking at Denzel Washington's movies, but I didn't go back far enough.
I thought the movie was made in the 90's and it was made in 1984.
