Massachusetts governor proposes new gun laws after Newtown

Source: Reuters

(Reuters) - Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick introduced a new series of gun laws on Wednesday that would tighten rules on sales of weapons and ammunition, in the wake of last month's deadly school shooting in neighboring Connecticut.

Patrick made the announcement a day after New York state adopted one of the toughest gun-control laws in the United States and as President Barack Obama unveils proposals expected to include a new national assault-weapons ban and strengthened background checks on prospective gun buyers. "In the wake of too many tragedies, I have filed legislation to tackle the problem of gun violence and illegal firearm possession," Patrick, a Democrat, said in a statement. He also proposed an increase in funding to the state's mental health programs aimed at reducing violence.

The proposed Massachusetts legislation would require gun buyers to undergo background checks even when they made purchases at gun shows, limit buyers to purchasing one gun per month and create four new crimes including being a felon in possession of a firearm and commission of a violent misdemeanor while in possession of a firearm.

It would also require state courts to share relevant mental health records with state and criminal databases used to conduct background checks on potential gun buyers. Patrick, who will give his annual state-of-the-state address on Wednesday evening, said that the budget proposal he plans to make next week will include $5 million in new funding for state mental health programs aimed at training school staff on how to recognize symptoms of mental illness in students and to better train police officers to handle people with mental illness in crisis situations.

Democrats control both houses of the state legislature in the liberal-leaning state.

1. He needs to address the mental health aspect

The guns were not illegally purchased or owned. Is he proposing that parents of deranged children should not own guns? Or is he going to make it easier to commit such children to a health care facility?

4. yeah not so much. psycologists will acknowedge they do little better than chance

at identifying 'dangerous' persons over the last 30 years.

"the mental health 'problem'". Bullshit. That's a cop out. It isnt a crime to be mentally ill in this country either, and while many people do need help, who are you to say anyone should be treated as second class.

how about all of us soldiers returning home? we are high risk for self destructive and dangerous behavior. lets put us all in the database too! anything and everything except acknowledging the truth: americans have an obsession with guns. And americans think that gun ownership makes them manly and tough.

You are correct, that the newtown maniac had legally owned and purchased firearms. They were not his. This manaic got his hands on them because the gun owning culture does not have the negative peer pressure of leaving weapons -secured- when they are not in direct control of the registered owner. Because his mother did not store them in a vault.

the PROBLEM is that assault rifles are everywhere. Everywhere. and almost anybody can get them

6. Maybe a background check on all residents of the home

In Mass, at least to get a handgun, your local police chief has to sign off on it ( he can say no for any reason or no reason at all) . I believe FID cards are obtained through the police, but if you have a clear background check they have to give you one.

2. We have pretty strict gun laws in Massachusetts anyway,

but the gun show loophole still exists.

More can't hurt.

3. I agree,

but some of the Tea Party people around here are going to be in arms about this, for sure.

Throughout last year, a sales dealer near here was advertising buying guns before Nov 6th.

7. Good! I moved to Boston from NYC 6 months ago and I am happy to see that the Governor

is taking this very seriously. I am so sick of these gun nuts who object to ANY kind of gun regulation whatsoever. What are they so damn afraid of?
