FBI probes cyber threats against Steubenville sheriff
Source: CBS News
STEUBENVILLE, OHIO - The FBI is investigating cyber threats in an eastern Ohio city that include death threats against the local sheriff's family and an email that apparently shut down the police chief's computer. The threats are part of a series of online messages that have targeted individuals and authorities in Steubenville amid increased attention over two high school football players who are facing rape charges. Jefferson County Sheriff Fred Abdalla said Wednesday he'd provided the FBI a copy of an anonymous Facebook post in which someone threatened to kill his family. Steubenville Police Chief William McCafferty said he gave the FBI an email that he had opened Wednesday morning, which then disabled his computer. would not be inclined to hate you and the police chief. ever think about that? instead of protecting scum and a football team, do your damned jobs.

Every law enforcement agency has their computer systems locked down, especially sheriff departments because they connect to FBI and Homeland Security networks. Any suspicious emails are flagged and dropped into a secure servers and analyzed by IT.

|
I will check with my friends who work on the DHS IT contract and who are responsible for the connections to local law enforcement in his area.
I'm not buying his excuse. But he shouldn't be targeted as he's not involved in the cover-up. |

doesn't seem to be involved in the corruption. He was hired after the Justice Department came in and cleaned house, as for the police chief and city manager. I don't condone death threats. I'm even opposed to the death penalty for convicted felons. You'll never find me condoning death for anyone who hasn't even been convicted!

But enough of the town is involved in the cover up (the county sheriff, the prosecutor, school administrators, coaches, local radio personality who is also a school booster, etc.) that people tend to go scattershot.

Last edited Wed Jan 9, 2013, 11:09 PM USA/ET - Edit history (1) Maybe they could check out that minor abduction/gang rape incident that happened to cross state lines, and figure out how the sheriff's men managed to "accidentally" erase still and video evidence off several phones and devices, especially when phone designers deliberately make that difficult to do by accident.
And also, maybe they could check into why the sheriff claims blatant confessions on video are just "stupidity" and not "confessions" and why he can't make an arrest on the strength of that. I'm becoming more skeptical by the day that the FBI serves any purpose, and I'm convinced that sheriff is nothing but a wart on his county. |

That's unfair considering the FBI has only recently become involved.
Give them time to finish their investigation. |

26. Perhaps, but I'm saying where were they before?
|
This crime took place in August. There have been signs of chicanery and corruption in this investigation for months. Yes, I'll give them a chance, but either the sheriff is the dumbest person in the world for bringing them in, or he knows he has nothing to fear from them. |

|
Last edited Thu Jan 10, 2013, 02:07 AM USA/ET - Edit history (3) If not for #KnightSec, you, everyone else and the FBI still wouldn't know about this case.
And it wasn't the county sheriff who brought them in, it was the chief of police and he's not involved in the cover up. You're not the only one getting them confused. |

29. That's only because . . .
|
I skimmed the headline and didn't know the chief of police was even involved. So, you see I didn't have them confused. I would have paid more attention, but the process is interesting only when in light of the outcome. So far, there's no outcome. I'm still amazed the cover up came so close to working. So, what the hell did authorities get away with before we had Internet vigilantes? Like Gotham without Batman? Where the Joker holds office and wins every day? |

30. We know they got the alcohol from assistant coaches
|
The drugs most likely came from the local radio personality who is close to the teams and the student athletes.
One of the boys involved sent him a picture of the rape victim the night of the rape. #KnightSec hacked his email and found it and emails between the boys and him over a long period of time. |
