Next Up: IMMIGRATION

Source: Huffington Post

WASHINGTON -- Despite a bruising fiscal cliff battle that managed to set the stage for an even more heated showdown that will likely take place in a matter of months, President Barack Obama is planning to move full steam ahead with the rest of his domestic policy agenda.

An Obama administration official said the president plans to push for immigration reform this January. The official, who spoke about legislative plans only on condition of anonymity, said that coming standoffs over deficit reduction are unlikely to drain momentum from other priorities. The White House plans to push forward quickly, not just on immigration reform but gun control laws as well.

The timeframe is likely to be cheered by Democrats and immigration reform advocates alike, who have privately expressed fears that Obama's second term will be drowned out in seemingly unending showdowns between parties. The just-completed fiscal cliff deal is giving way to a two-month deadline to resolve delayed sequestration cuts, an expiring continuing resolution to fund the government and a debt ceiling that will soon be hit.

1. Uh, no. Next up: trimming the $600B military budget.

They really need $600 freaking-BILLION-dollars? For one year? Really?

2. I disagree, next up should be Immigration.

The Defense budget is going to have to be part of a larger package of which the President will get. While they are bickering about that package, the President should tackle Immigration...

7. The government could have a better use of resources

in a structured immigration reform than just trying the enforcement first approach

3. The Republicans have lost the Latino Vote for a Generation

Much as the Democrats lost the South for a generation (More like 3), as LBJ famously said when signing the Civil Rights Act of 1964, the current Tea Party loons have lost Latino voters for at least a generation. Their extreme anti-immigrant positions have really turned the Latino community off. The Democrats should put for a fair, reasonable approach to becoming citizens and LET THE GOP SAY NO! If the Democrats would learn to be politically ruthless against the Republicans, they would be winning most of these fights.

What I do not want to see is the promise of citizenship for military service. Young Latinos should not be cannon-fadder for the evil corporate class and there unnecessary wars.
