Ireland to legalise abortions where woman's life is at risk
Source: the guardian
In a move unthinkable even a few years ago, the Irish government has confirmed it will introduce legislation permitting abortions in limited circumstances. The decision follows pressure from the European court of human rights, which ruled that abortions should be allowed in the republic in cases where a woman's life was at risk. The taoiseach, Enda Kenny, who represents one of the most traditional rural Catholic constituencies in Ireland, said the Fine Gael-Labour coalition would proceed with a mixture of "legislation with regulation". The measures would be based on proposals from the so-called Expert Group. The reforms are expected to allow for terminations where there is a medical risk to a woman's life or when she is thought to be in danger of killing herself. It is unclear whether the law will allow for terminations in cases of rape or sexual abuse. Read more: http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2012/dec/18/ireland-legalise-abortion-life-risk

7. TOO BAD, they let that young woman DIE, pleading to LIVE! How many others?
|
What is the body count aggregation in order for this law to be passed?
How many died, before social media made this a horrendous violation of human rights? |

8. I thought they already had it that way,
|
but the doctors there still refused that poor woman an abortion.
It looks like they're adding a mental health, rape, and incest clause now. Will they also allow a conscience cop-out for the doctors? |

14. The Courts ruled against law. The Legislature made no moves. Doctors did not have regs.
|
Once the courts ruled there was no law against it, but no law allowing it. So they were afraid of being prosecuted. This will give them limited, but at least defined, situations in which they will be allowed to do their job. |

10. I thought they already had that, but doctors were too afraid of making

the 'life at risk' call for it to be any good. If this doesn't include some sort of iron-clad protection for doctors and women making that decision, this seems like little more than CYA window-dressing.
And in truth, the only way to really provide 'protection of life' access is an absolute pro-choice position... |

11. So let let ectopic pregnancies rupture?
|
Let god/nature "abort" the baby and then furiously try to save the woman's life?
No abortions on a fallopian tube? |

12. Oh, gee. How magnanimous.

Sanctimonious pricks.
A church of men, murdering women for centuries while government kowtows. I LOVE THE SEPARATION OF CHURCH AND STATE! Let's have more of it. |
