Gohmert: ‘I wish to God’ Connecticut principal had an M4 assault rifle

Source: Raw Story

Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-TX) on Sunday insisted that a tragic massacre at Sandy Forks Elementary School in Connecticut could have been prevented if Principal Dawn Hochsprung had been armed with an M4 carbine, an assault rifle designed by the U.S. military for urban warfare.

During an interview on Sunday, Fox News host Chris Wallace asked Gohmert if he still believed that the country would be safer if more people were armed as he had said after a mass shooting at a theater in Aurora, Colorado earlier this year.

“Every mass killing of more than three people in recent history has been in a place where guns were prohibited — except for one,” the Texas Republican explained. “They choose this place, they know no one will be armed.”

Gohmert became emotional as he continued: “You know, having been and judge and having reviewed photographs of these horrific scenes and knowing that children have these defensive wounds — gunshots through their arms and hands as they try to protect themselves — and hearing the heroic stories the principal, lunging trying to protect — Chris, I wish to God she had had an M4 in her office locked up. So, when she heard gunfire she pulls it out and she didn’t have to lunge heroically with nothing in her hands, but she takes him out, takes his head off before he can kill those precious kids.

Time to vote IDIOTS like Gohmert out of office. Maybe he can get a job working directly for the NRA. Why should we pay his salary to do their bidding?

16. Exactly. Even in a republicant dystopia where the principal was dressed to kill, literally,

there is no way to ensure that she would not be a fatality. There is no way to be sure that if she got off a few shots that she might by her own actions hurt or kill others she was trying to protect.

The republicants are insane.

As for the "idiots" in Texas, they exist all across our country, even in so-called "blue" states. They are the direct result of the republicans' War on Education started over thirty years ago.

And I don't mean Parry's joke about it. And an online petition doesn't count, either.

I suspected the 'x' was a mistake, but on DU, where "Texass" is a common insult lobbed randomly at us, we get kind of sensitive about that. So I apologize

fair share of right wing nut jobs/political whores. What people who are not from here do not understand is that there are also a lot of us here who don't follow Republican dogma and fight against it. Gohmert is a politician from a rich, mostly white District. Talk to people is Shelia Jackson Lee's District and you would find a different answer. I have our states flag as my Avatar so people can see that we have Progressives everywhere. Please, attack the man, not the state!

Maybe, just maybe, he should consider committing himself. He's long overdue.

6. “Every mass killing ... has been in a place where guns were prohibited - except one..."

...and that ONE was on a fucking military installation in his own fucking state:

The Fort Hood shooting was a shooting that took place on November 5, 2009, at Fort Hood, the most populous U.S. military installation in the world, located just outside Killeen, Texas. In the course of the shooting, a single gunman killed 13 people and wounded 29 others. It is the worst shooting ever to take place on an American military base.

Fucking nitwit.

most people on that base are not allowed to carry firearms, loaded. Only MP's and certain specific duties. In peacetime at home, the greatest danger is negligent discharges, and the military is positively zealous in limiting those.

about the wounds in this incident! I know as a pathologist that unless he was there at the scene or during the autopsies OR has direct links to the ME office or the investigators, he's extrapolating from what he may have seen elsewhere or imagined in his screwed mind.

The investigators and pathologists in this case have been very circumspect about such details which is appropriate. So this idiot congress-critter is being graphically dramatic to stir emotions (fear) to his backward way of thinking. It's akin to the anti-abortion protesters who picket with images of bloody fetuses... Ever wonder where they get such images?!

34. Hey, GOMER, by the time the principal had unlocked

that gun, loaded it, and had gone stomping down the hall to shoot the bad guy, it was all over.

Even if the teacher had a gun in an unlocked drawer, s/he'd have been the first one he shot and would never have had time to grab it, aim and shoot.

GOMER, these things happen too fast for your wild west mentality to cope with.

GOMER: acronym for Get Outta My Emergency Room, usually applied to nursing home dumps of patients who are demented, incontinent, combative, and not particularly ill.

It's ridiculous to believe an armed principal could have stopped this tragedy. Like someone said above, there's no way we can all be walking around armed and ready to draw at any moment. That would be insane. It really would be like the wild west. And we all know how safe the wild west was.

41. Gohmert is a gun idolator.

There are reasonable gun owners ... there are reasonable proponents of a individual 2nd Amendment right.

Then there are the gun fetishists and/or the gun idolators.

Gohmert and his ilk are gun idolators: the gun can do no wrong ... it can never be blamed or implicated in wanton death and destruction; it is indeed for them an answer, a solver, an object with near miraculous protective powers.

The fetishists get their ego, self-worth and virility identified with the 'power' of the gun.

In my estimation, there is a national neurosis tied up with gun/violence culture ... and, yes, I include folks who spend hours and hours and hours in fantasy worlds blowing imaginary people apart with their 'game winning' weapon.

Performance artists and singer Laurie Anderson has a "routine" that is a comment on this same kind of "if only there had been more guns" logic:

I paraphrase:

"When I fly, I always take a bomb on the plane with me. See, the chances of one bomb being on the plane are pretty small. But the chances of TWO bombs being on the plane are astronomically miniscule! So, you see, by carrying a bomb on the plane with me, I greatly reduce my chances of being blown up."

Same logic! (or lack thereof)

and on top of being a teacher, I have to be:

a referee
a coach
a substitute parent
a cook
a janitor
a nurse
a computer technician
a child psychologist
a shoulder to cry on
a job reference

and now someone wants me or my principal to have a gun? Let me tell you something...

I teach in a classroom that has students from grade 6 to grade 8 in it. I used to be a security guard...I weigh about 195, so I'm a pretty big guy. I have a student who is taller and heavier than I am, and when he gets in a bad mood you get out of his way. Now, if I had a gun in my classroom, guess which person in my class is going to be more likely to get to it before I do?

Guns in the classroom are like guns in the home. A gun in the home is more likely to kill the owner or someone related to the owner. I can deal with coaching volleyball...I can't deal with one of my students getting killed because I have a gun in my class.

imagine what steps would be needed at a place like a SCHOOL? There would be so many stages of accessing and loading a firearm in a school, there would be no way a teacher or administrator could be battle-ready when a gunman is unloading at people.

So, explain to me again how arming everyone in a school would have prevented this and other mass shootings at schools?

the first paragraph that "ordains and establishes our Constitution for the United States of America."

Of course it is natural for this fearful man to think the solution to stopping gun violence is to proliferate more guns on this already gun crazy society. Until our elected leaders start to do the right thing, unfortunately, we will see more tragedies like this one. And lets not forget the economic struggles that faces too many of our citizens will continue to be, also, a factor that drives people into dark places.

103. There's no such thing as a fight, flight or shoot instinct.

How come it's difficult for people to see it takes training to think of using a gun when you're under fire? They suggest things like doing away with gun free zones and arming teachers (just another thing teachers are expected to do without getting paid, BTW). They seem to think we have to unleash the Clint Eastwood in everyone, and if he's not unleashed already, it must be the government that's getting in his way. No, Dirty Harry wouldn't have let a gun free zone stand in his way.

The statistics on crimes thwarted by guns are not in the millions, or hundred thousands, as progunners have been led to believe. It's actually somewhere in the tens of thousands if even that. And that's usually not returning fire. Soldiers have to train in a unit, with group reinforcement to learn how to hold a position and return fire. And in their first encounter with fire, they'll freeze.

Shooting practice will do nothing to overcome this. For self-defense, guns are a fraud. You're more likely to die of a gunshot wound if you have a gun in the house, as Lanza's mother did. It's hard to justify self-defense when it makes you more likely to die.

110. What she did, that's called fight.

Yes, by comparison, charging the shooter is the more natural thing to do.

Maybe it's the term "fight or flight that confused you. This is a term neuro-biologists to describe what out sympathetic nervous system pushes us to do in a stressful situation. Shooting is not "fight" in a primal sense. It's a trained skill.

I didn't say what soldiers do is irrelevant. Where the hell did you get that? What soldiers do is a skill. You can't just pick up a gun, spend a few hours at the shooting range, and do it.

Reread what I wrote, because almost all of it seems have gotten by you. To perform with any reliability under combat stress you have to have a lot of training, (and some experience). To shoot straight when you're being shot at takes a even more training, much more than just target practice.

If you reread it, you'd see that I wrote this:

"Soldiers have to train in a unit, with group reinforcement, to learn how to hold a position and return fire. And in their first encounter with fire, they'll freeze."

How did you read that and think I was saying what soldiers do is irrelevant?

In case this is unclear, I meant they learn the skill of standing under fire from group reinforcement. They can carry that into individual action, but that's the way the skill is trained into them.

I'm saying it takes group reinforcement (or some other technique) to learn to overcome your natural instincts in a shooting. You can also freeze undecided between fight and flight, and that's usually what happens in battle with green units.

(BTW, this is irrelevant, because I've said the fight or flight instincts explained her mode of heroism either way: but there's been no verification yet that she died charging anybody. It's still a rumor. Who saw it? Who in that room survived, and how? How were they out of sight and still in a position to see her?

It's possible that she did it, but you should really use verified facts when you try to picture how people really behave in such a situations. We try to turn horror stories into hero stories as quickly as possible. We do it so we can stand the grief of meaningless killing. That doesn't mean the hero stories are what usually happen.)

128. "Relevant" not "irrelevant"

Here's my post in it's entirety:

108. She charged an armed man barehanded and you think a story about what most soldiers do

is relevant?

If she'd had a gun she would have frozen, but she attacked barehanded?!

Really?!!

You misread my entire post if you read "relevant" as "irrelevant."

I have seen many videotapes of people shooting back. I doubt that they were all trained in specialized combat training. I have read many, many newspaper stories of people shooting armed robbers who "had the drop on them." Maybe most people would pee their pants and defecate and freeze and die. Perhaps the natural thing to do would be to ignore the gun or throw it away and charge headlong into the gunfire unarmed.

As for whether the woman charged the gunman, that report came out early and has persisted. It could be made up out of thin air, or the testimony of surviving children and forensic evidence may support it.

As for the idea that if a principal had a gun and heard shooting in her school, her first instinct would be to leave the gun and take on the attacker barehanded—it would take a lot of evidence for me to believe that. I'm not saying I can't be persuaded, just that I have a very difficult time believing that.

Let me state this for emphasis. My understanding is that the principal heard shooting while safely in her office. The gunman had to shoot to get through the locked doors at the front of the school. Her fight or flight moment happened when she decided to leave her office. She did not make her decision while personally being shot at. The idea that she would have left her gun even if she had one to go confront him unarmed is difficult to accept.

And I wish the kid didn't have access to weapons at home so the principal and 26 others would still be alive now.

What an idiot.

111. Or a grenade. Taking the pin out and waiting to die seems more realistic than his hairbrained idea.

114. When Dumb Redneck Deacons Become Congressional Representatives!

I'm trying to piece together what kind of person listens to Louie Gohmert talk and says "Yeah, THAT's the guy I wants representin' ME in Congress!". I'm also trying to come to grips with the fact that there are a whole hell of a LOT of people who think like this and supposedly walk erect, seeing as how Louie is where he is, and all . . .

115. Just ban the guns, make it a criminal offence

You can buy Uzis and assault rifles in yard sales. Something has to be changed. It has to be banned or this is going to keep happening.

121. Yep the gun manufacturer's dream world...Gun lust in the USA

All the criminals have guns, all the insane mass murders have guns and all mom and pop, grandma and grandpa are armed to the teeth!

What kind of a sick fuckin country are we living in?

Just think, mass killer invades school and all the teachers whip out their personal machine-guns and the kids are caught in the crossfire!

WHAT COULD POSSIBLY GO WRONG???

126. Then many more people could have done the deed

because they wouldn't even have needed to bring their own weapon.

127. A teacher with a gun saved a lot of lives in Pearl, MS 15 years ago

He even saved the life of the shooter (this is one of the few where the shooter didn't die).

As far as I know that was the only shooting with an armed teacher, and N=1 arguments are usually bad. I doubt the risks outweigh the benefits, but this is something we have seen actually happen.

130. as a gun owner and a progressive

let me say as a gun owning progressive,(purchased after being a home invasion victim) gohmert's comment reeks of ignorance. i can think of at least 5 other weapons preferable to an m4 for close quarter defense. the optimal being a shotgun. lethal at close range, less penetration thru walls, less aiming time required. most rifles are sighted in at least 100 m. how many self defense situations are at a 100 m.?

133. Assumes that a school principal could use an M4 in that situation without taking even more

innocent lives. Not a safe assumption, imo.

137. what neanderthals like this

fail to realize is that the perpetrator often has the elements of surprise, shock and awe on his side. Moreover many have carefully planned their attacks. Years ago a perp walked into the DC Homicide Squad headquarters and killed a detective and an FBI agent, both of whom were armed. A third agent, also armed, was shot and left for dead!

More guns means more shots fired and potentially more people wounded or killed. Repukes like him already disparage teachers and their unions yet they want teachers armed and ready for battle. Having guns in school more likely translates into curiosity gone awry with an accidental death and big liability.
