North Korea launches rocket in defiance of critics

Isolated and impoverished North Korea launched its second long- range rocket of 2012 on Wednesday in what it said was a bid to put a satellite into space.

The North launched the rocket close to the first anniversary of the death of former leader Kim Jong-il and as elections loom in South Korea and Japan.

The launch, reported by South Korean media, was confirmed by South Korea's Defense Ministry.

Pyongyang says it is entitled to launch a satellite into space but critics say the rocket development is aimed at nurturing the kind of technology needed to mount a nuclear warhead on a long-range missile.

5. Direction, in this case, meaning the the orbital inclination

The orbital inclination, meaning the angle with respect to the equator (or poles) can reveal a lot about the payload's mission and the rocket's capabilities. That's what direction means in this context.

It's all it ever was. They will probably try a third time on the nuclear bomb.

Wed Dec 12, 2012 11:10am EST

* Council to meet at 1545 GMT on North Korean launch
* Diplomats hope for swift council condemnation
* Whether UN sanctions can be expanded depends on China
By Louis Charbonneau

UNITED NATIONS, Dec 12 (Reuters) - The U.N. Security Council met on North Korea's rocket launch on Wednesday, a move Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon condemned as a "provocative act" in breach of resolutions banning Pyongyang from developing ballistic missiles.

Several council diplomats said they hoped the 15-nation body could swiftly agree a similar condemnation and later consider a binding resolution, possibly expanding already existing U.N. sanctions against Pyongyang.

"Clearly the Security Council will need to react and react strongly," a senior Western diplomat said on condition of anonymity ...
