Tea party leaders in Nevada rethink strategy

Source: Las Vegas Review Journal

Art Gisi likes to joke that he and Cathie Lynn Profant, a co-leader of the Grass Roots Tea Party of Nevada, are "so conservative we make most tea partyers look like left-wing liberals."

Which makes it all the more remarkable that Gisi and Profant are leading a campaign to shift conservative Republicans away from fighting abortion and battling illegal immigrants on every front.

A woman's right to choose abortion is the law of the land and should be accepted, they said Tuesday at the group's first post-election meeting following a year in which Republicans were accused of waging a "war on women."

The tea party leaders also proposed pushing for a new Nevada law to let undocumented immigrants get "driver privilege cards" so they can legally hit the roads and buy auto insurance.

The idea, modeled on a program in Utah, is to make Nevada roads safer and perhaps lower insurance premiums for all drivers. But the impetus is a post-November realization that Republicans have lately been on the losing side of immigration, costing them the decisive Latino vote and the White House.

"Nevada's changing and we as Republicans are going to need to step up or we're not going to win any more elections," Profant said. "By staying back here, the rest of the country is leaving us."

12. Absolutely not to be trusted

They simply saw that their crypto-fascistic economic goals are being hurt by using social issues as wedges. They're regrouping to re-empower the same corporate agenda. They're slimy as ever but maybe getting more devious.

14. Good assessment, although it's hard to see how they could get more devious

than they are already. However, their base isn't noted for brains and would probably be taken in by mere cosmetic changes. They are the "low information voters," remember? But us high-information voters need to always bear in mind that they serve their corporate masters FIRST, and by any means necessary.

It's all about the money.
I won't believe anything has changed until they dump Grover et al.

22. Never trust a person who self identifies as a Tea Party member.

I'm serious, they can't be trusted in any manner.

I called this one, their going to drop the moral issues, try to appeal to the masses, while protecting the interests of the rich.

18. Exactly. The rich (Koch brothers) are in it for the money (fiscal) not

for issues like abortion and illegal immigration. Their support for these issues was just tactical to keep the pinhead right wing base inboard.

9. "Grass Roots Tea Party of Nevada"

Art Gisi likes to joke that he and Cathie Lynn Profant, a co-leader of the Grass Roots Tea Party of Nevada, are "so conservative we make most tea partyers look like left-wing liberals."

Even though it's part of their self-labeled title, any piece that doesn't challenge or at least pursue that attribute is just another exercise of "pretend" journalism. The "Tea Party" was co-opted shortly after its inception by the likes of the Koch brothers and they're nothing more than mouthpieces for the plutocrats. Sure, they may shift their "marketing" to further disguise themselves as Trojan horses, but make no mistake about it. They're merely a way to further corrupt the government.

10. Ultimately, they will do the Koch brothers' bidding

And the Koch brothers don't give a rat's ass about social issues, except for the lip service they give them. The Tea Party is a manufactured movement of tools of the Kochs, Rove, etc. to assure that the 1/10 of 1 percent continue to rule and expand their privileges.

Tea Party = Useful Idiots.

16. The Scorpion and the Frog

One day, a scorpion looked around at the mountain where he lived and decided that he wanted a change. So he set out on a journey through the forests and hills. He climbed over rocks and under vines and kept going until he reached a river.
The river was wide and swift, and the scorpion stopped to reconsider the situation. He couldn't see any way across. So he ran upriver and then checked downriver, all the while thinking that he might have to turn back.
Suddenly, he saw a frog sitting in the rushes by the bank of the stream on the other side of the river. He decided to ask the frog for help getting across the stream.
"Hellooo Mr. Frog!" called the scorpion across the water, "Would you be so kind as to give me a ride on your back across the river?"
"Well now, Mr. Scorpion! How do I know that if I try to help you, you wont try to kill me?" asked the frog hesitantly.
"Because," the scorpion replied, "If I try to kill you, then I would die too, for you see I cannot swim!"
Now this seemed to make sense to the frog. But he asked. "What about when I get close to the bank? You could still try to kill me and get back to the shore!"
"This is true," agreed the scorpion, "But then I wouldn't be able to get to the other side of the river!"
"Alright then...how do I know you wont just wait till we get to the other side and THEN kill me?" said the frog.
"Ahh...," crooned the scorpion, "Because you see, once you've taken me to the other side of this river, I will be so grateful for your help, that it would hardly be fair to reward you with death, now would it?!"
So the frog agreed to take the scorpion across the river. He swam over to the bank and settled himself near the mud to pick up his passenger. The scorpion crawled onto the frog's back, his sharp claws prickling into the frog's soft hide, and the frog slid into the river. The muddy water swirled around them, but the frog stayed near the surface so the scorpion would not drown. He kicked strongly through the first half of the stream, his flippers paddling wildly against the current.
Halfway across the river, the frog suddenly felt a sharp sting in his back and, out of the corner of his eye, saw the scorpion remove his stinger from the frog's back. A deadening numbness began to creep into his limbs.
"You fool!" croaked the frog, "Now we shall both die! Why on earth did you do that?"
The scorpion shrugged, and did a little jig on the drownings frog's back.
"I could not help myself. It is my nature."

17. How to deal with tea partiers, based on this story

Abridged version: one day, a scorpion noticed that the supply of spiders and mice was drying up on his side of the river, but that there were plenty on the other side. So he approached a frog.

"Mr. Frog," he began, "please take me to the other side of the river and I will get you all the flies you'd ever want to eat."
'Why would I do that? You'll sting me and I'll die.'
"No, trust me, I would never do that."
'You're a scorpion. I don't really trust you.'
"No, really. Trust me. You'll be safe."

So the frog finally agreed to take the scorpion across the river. The scorpion got on his back and they entered the water.

About a third of the way across, the frog suddenly dove to the bottom, unloading the scorpion. As it splashed about, for scorpions can't swim, the frog resurfaced and looked at it.

"Why the hell did you do that? Now I'm gonna die!"
'I decided I didn't trust you after all.'
