Pat Robertson Challenges Creationism

Source: CNN

Washington (CNN) – Televangelist Pat Robertson challenged the idea that Earth is 6,000 years old this week, saying the man who many credit with conceiving the idea, former Archbishop of Ireland James Ussher, “wasn’t inspired by the Lord when he said that it all took 6,000 years.”

The statement was in response to a question Robertson fielded Tuesday from a viewer on his Christian Broadcasting Network show "The 700 Club.” In a submitted question, the viewer wrote that one of her biggest fears was that her children and husband would not go to heaven “because they question why the Bible could not explain the existence of dinosaurs.”

“You go back in time, you've got radiocarbon dating. You got all these things, and you've got the carcasses of dinosaurs frozen in time out in the Dakotas,” Robertson said. “They're out there. So, there was a time when these giant reptiles were on the Earth, and it was before the time of the Bible. So, don't try and cover it up and make like everything was 6,000 years. That's not the Bible.”

2. Pat Robertson's making right with his God before he dies?

Let's see:

He's recently recanted his life long position against the death penalty.

He's now talking about legalizing pot, recanting his life long opposition to it.

He's now recanted his life long position of creationism.

Pat has finally acknowledged global warming is real.

So, when will Pat Robertson apologize to the millions of gay men, women and children he has marginalized and persecuted his entire "career" helping make himself a wealthy man?

There's a lot of blood still on Pat Robertson's hands.

Blood Diamond Pat Roberston may be afraid. But I'm not Jesus.

8. Quick, check the Book of Revelation!

Quick, check the Book of Revelation! I think this may be one of the signs!

When it comes to religions, the attitude towards "new" ideas like evolution which are in conflict with holy scripture will follow the usual path:

1. Vociferous denial and vigorous opposition. Denounce, prosecute, or even execute the infidels who proclaim the new idea.
2. Embarrassed silence, as the new idea is too obviously true to denounce any longer.
3. Grudging acceptance. This "new" idea is not actually in conflict with out holy scripture if you read this passage as metaphor.
4. Claim the holy books said so all along, and the reinterpretation of vague passages that could be twisted to support the "new" idea get the official seal of approval (Hork! Hork!)
5. Vociferous denial and vigorous opposition to those challenging the now accepted and officially approved "new" idea with refinements and new data. The cycle begins anew.

Christianity has been vacillating between 2. and 3. when it comes to evolution and creationism for a while now, even regressing at times.

9. He should lose his day job over this.

In essence, he's stating that Creationism is irreconcilable with Reality. If the dinosaurs came before the Bible, the very first line is untrue. What could come before "In the beginning"?

If he means that they existed before the Bible was written, he's contradicting the notion that the Bible was divinely guided.

14. Going Backwards

Here in TN, they have taken steps though new legislation to allow creationism back into the classroom. This law turns the clock back nearly 100 years here in the seemingly unprogressive South and is simply embarrassing. There is no argument against the Theory of Evolution other than that of religious doctrine. The Monkey Law only opens the door for fanatic Christianity to creep its way back into our classrooms. You can see my visual response as a Tennessean to this absurd law on my artist’s blog at http://dregstudiosart.blogspot.com/2012/04/pulpit-in-classroom-biblical-agenda-in.html with some evolutionary art and a little bit of simple logic.
