Three arrested as naked protesters storm Boehner’s office over budget cuts

Source: Raw Story

At least three AIDS activists were arrested on Tuesday after they and other naked demonstrators briefly took over House Speaker John Boehner’s (R-OH) to protest budget cuts to health care services.

Activists from ACT UP, New York ACT UP, Philadelphia ACT UP, Housing Works and the Student Global AIDS Campaign stripped down in the lobby of the Speakers office and began chanting to send Congress a message ahead of World AIDS Day on December 1.

“Budget cuts are really rude, that’s why we have to be so nude!” the protesters shouted. “Boehner, Boehner, don’t be a dick! Budget cuts will make us sick!”

After several warnings from Capital Police the protesters agreed to get dressed and leave the building. But after media left, activists said at least three of the women who had been nude were arrested on charges of lewd conduct and indecent exposure. No male protesters were reportedly arrested.

1. Way to make the story "naked protestors" rather than "cuts to health care services", ACT UP...

Sometimes I wonder how we have managed to get as far as we have...

2. I was going to make a snarky statement about naked men at Boner's office but...

I won't.

Many times left perplexed by events such as this...I know it's difficult to get press and to get attention brought upon an issue...but, I often wonder if there isn't a better way.

Now, what is that other "way"...hell, I'm not sure but there must be another option that will not be tossed away as some sort
of silly "stunt".

4. I

approve of them exercising their freedom of expression and hope more people rebell against Congress. And if those Draconian measures do take effects without our approval, the American people have a right to express their disapproval. It is their constitutional right. If they wanted to cut those entitlements, then Congress should have bought it to the electorate, but they ran away from it because they knew that they would lose on the issue. People paid their hard earned money into these Entitlements. Any discussions about altering a contract with the people should go through the Electorate and not some bargain behind close doors or under the table in secret meetings.

5. I'm not sure there is a better way.

Unfortunately, our "liberal media" ignores most protest, even if it is large and noticeable. It is impossible to get attention or fair coverage for anything progressives, labor, or the left are trying to convey. I don't believe a more traditional protest in Boehner's office would have made the news. It would have been beneath notice.

10. I agree with you on this

At least this way it will make the news. I was going to say "covered" at first but then I realized that could be taken as an unintended pun.

12. AIDs activists strip naked in Boehner's office to protest the Republican

stripping of the budget items that keep them alive.

It isn't just a way of getting attention. It points out the discrepancy in the Republican mantra about the budget. Instead of cutting back, we need to raise more in taxes.

Just wait until they try to cut Social Security. Can you imagine all the seniors willing to strip to make their point?

And that point is that, without Social Security, people can't feed and clothe themselves, much less rent or pay taxes on a place to live.

Cutting these essential services will not solve the problem in our society which is TOO FEW JOBS.

Giving tax breaks or continuing the tax breaks already given to the rich will also not solve the problem. In fact, tax breaks for the rich are one of the major causes of the problem.

What do the rich do with the money they don't pay in taxes? I know. They claim they create jobs. There is some truth in that. Problem is, the jobs they create are not for human beings in the US.

Their tax savings go to create jobs for machines, for computers, for labor-saving, cost-saving devices. Or, alternatively, the money goes to the third world where people can survive on a few dollars a day because they don't some of the basics we require people to have here like electricity, a septic tank or a link to sewers. In many underdeveloped countries, they just dump their waste into an open sewer. Doesn't smell nice when you get close to it, but . . . . translates into lower wages and lots of savings on the labor costs for producing the junk we will put under our Christmas trees this year.

Fact is the rich are not creating jobs right now. They are destroying jobs. They are trying to "save costs" so they can do more of their job destruction.

Every dollar saved on Medicare or Medicaid helps destroy jobs in the medical field. Every dollar saved on education helps put teachers out of work.

This is just an obvious, basic fact.

Stripping down naked in the office of a Republican congressman is, I think, a very appropriate way to protest the Republican plan to strip the US budget of essential items -- and to strip more jobs out of our economy.

15. Yeah,

I'm actually hoping for a public revolt and will actively join in it. It is our rights under the constitution when Congress disrespects an election. This notion that they can disrespect the electorate doesn't fly with me. I think members should be recalled and impeached by the people. I wouldn't even mind seeing them tarred and feather right out of Washington D.C.

11. We should not be stripping funds from healthcare....

And how else are we to get their attention. Republicans, clearly, have no intersest in serving the pulic. Only amazing acts of defiance seem to get any press at all.

The arresting officers wanted to oggle the naked women and were too grossed out by the naked men to want to arrest any of them. Pure fucking sexism.

Cops are still scared of boobies I guess.
