Board Orders Recount of Early Voting Ballots in Allen West Race

Source: NBC

The St. Lucie County Canvassing Board on Friday ordered a recount of early voting ballots in the race between Republican Congressman Allen West and Democrat Patrick Murphy, hours after a judge declined to do the same.

The St. Lucie County Canvassing Board voted 2-1 late Friday in favor of the move in the 18th Congressional District contest, in which Murphy is the unofficial victor. A series of tabulation errors by the county has raised suspicion among West's campaign and its supporters and appeared to motivate the board's favorable vote.

It was a victory for West, delivered just after a defeat for the Republican congressman and conservative firebrand in the courtroom. But whether it will change the result in the race, in which Murphy has a lead of 1,907 votes, remained to be seen.

1. Murphy will certainly have a court case to challenge this, since this has already been ruled on

by SCOTUS back in 2000.

2. A judge today said ...

-snip-

Judge Dan Vaughn said the circuit court didn't have the authority to grant a recount in this case. However, Vaughn said the canvassing board can act on its own accord as it considers an early voting recount at a 4 p.m. meeting.

13. 14th Amendment, everyone gets treated equally, basically. But booley corrected me.

booley is right that Bush v. Gore was a one time deal.

17. Yes it was but the principles might reasonally appoly.

Not sure they're particularly relevant here.

I still wonder what basic principle was being referred to. This case is about one Congressional district, and surely all the votes within the district should be counted.

10. the 2000 scotus decision only applied to Bush v Gore

that's one of the reasons it was considered so shady.

So no, the SCOTUS wont' help with this I think.

But are we so sure West wont' lose again?

6. Rick Scott is going make sure West gets his way

http://www.palmbeachpost.com/news/news/state-regional-govt-politics/murphy-west-recount-debated-in-st-lucie-as-electio/nS8Xp/

U.S. Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, the chairwoman of the Democratic National Committee, also issued a statement linking Republican Gov. Rick Scott to West’s cause.

“In a clear effort to overturn an election result after having lost at the ballot box, Allen West has now run to Governor Rick Scott to needlessly interfere with and politicize a non-partisan election process… . Having Governor Scott intervene is outrageous and inappropriate. After disenfranchising Florida voters by cutting down early voting days and creating extraordinarily long lines at the polls, Governor Scott is now trying to blatantly overturn an election result he disagreed with and undermine Gertrude Walker, a three-decade veteran of the St. Lucie County Supervisor of Elections office.”

9. Yep. I don't much trust their count but I sure as hell don't trust their recount.

Especially with claims that Scott is interfering in this.

Oh goodie.

Now after the early voting ballots in St. Lucie County we can have a second celebration over Patrick Murphy defeated the mean and ignorant Allen West.

16. FL really needs FED DOJ INTERVENTION. Its voters are being denied basic RIGHTS to honest elects.

this is really disgusting. We all know the voter suppression was all about getting repugs re/elected and this is just another dirty trick. West is a sleaze, he deserves to be gone. Guess the TPARTY hasnt gotten the message. They didnt get elected this go round, because ppl didnt believe their lies and fall for deception rhetoric.

19. THIS IS MAKING ME SICK

Murphy won.

West never qualified for recount.

A small jurisdiction within district on it's own did a recount and lost 800 votes.

Now West qualifies for a recount.

Pathetic.....what one can expect from Florida.
