Amazon Losing Up to $1 Billion a Year on Streaming Video

Source: Wall Street Journal

Reed Hastings says that, one day, Amazon will provide real competition for Netflix.

But the Netflix CEO says Jeff Bezos will have to spend a lot of money before that happens: Hastings says Amazon is losing between $500 million and a $1 billion a year as it acquires streaming video content rights.

Hastings says he generated those numbers based on the value of the content deals that Amazon won when the two companies competed head to head. He says he thinks Amazonís costs are split evenly between its U.S. operations and Europe, where it operates the Lovefilm streaming service.

Last month, Netflix said it was on track to spend $2.1 billion on content over the next year.

10. Yeah, agreed. It's a great value. Along with Netflix, I use my PS3 more for watching streamed

movies and documentaries than for playing games. I just wish that Amazon's streaming service was better organized.

18. Me, too. Amazon is better than Netflix.

No subscriber fees. And they credited me back for slow streaming when I did not even request it. Plus they are now paying sales tax here in California and hiring. Plus their CEO gave $2 Million to support gay marriage, and for that I am grateful.

16. There are legal streaming sites out there that are free

The one that comes to me off the top of my head is crackle.com, their selection is more limited than Netflix or Amazon and you have to put up with a few ads but they occasionaly have some good movies on there and it is both free and legal.

21. One Way to Locate Streaming Sites for Specific Movies

is letmewatchthis.com.

I can't vouch for the status of the linked sites. Some of the sites also require you to install software, which I usually pass on.

Perhaps the web site provides free content by selling advertising. Many do.

6. That's what I love about capitalism, everyone works against each other to climb over the

next guy ... and then often we wonder why the country is so F'ed up. And many so damn nasty and hostile ... Often it brings out the worst of the worst, not the best.

8. Amazon is

to Etail like Walmart is to Retail.

The employees are treated like poop. So that bald CEO can choke on his money.

Seems legit.
