Fox News Captions Footage of Illegal Border Crossings With "The Hispanic Vote"

Source: Think Progress

Since Mitt Romney lost the Hispanic vote in record numbers on Election Day, some Republican lawmakers and conservative pundits have openly conceded that the party has a “rhetoric” problem when it comes to the Latino vote and have begun advocating for comprehensive immigration reform.
However, the GOP’s new-found eagerness to appeal to Latinos took a hit on Thursday afternoon when Fox News ran a segment about “The Hispanic Vote In 2012″ and proceeded to show stock footage of people crossing the border illegally:

The United States has hit net zero on illegal immigration, as fewer people are trying to cross the border illegally. In fact, a recent report found that more Mexicans appear to be leaving the United States for Mexico than are leaving Mexico for the U.S.A for the first time since the Great Depression.

2. Okay, I hate to point this out, but when "our" pundits treat Latinos as one issue voters,

I guess we should expect "their" pundits to present images that relay that idea.

Perhaps we shouldn't be suggesting that Latinos voted for Obama mostly, primarily, and almost exclusively because of immigration issues, particularly when most aware Latinos know that Obama administration has exceeded Republican expectations regarding deportations.

5. Huh? Dems and more liberal leaning pundits are not treating Latinos as single-issue voters.

Immigration is an important issue, but we would not have won if we didn't appeal to Latinos as Americans who deserve a shot as much as anyone else.

7. The only reason suggested by our pundits for the poor Latino numbers has been

the immigration issue. I've not heard our pundits suggest any other reason latinos fled the Republican party in such numbers.

So yes, if we are going to blame the Republican Latino failure on the immigration issue alone, then we are calling them one issue voters, which I disagreed with then, and now.

8. There is a sense in the Latino community of wait and see.

There has been an increase in deportations during Pres. Obama's first term. These deportations tear families apart and are very painful -- we have to remember that extended families include members with residency and citizenship and members without. Do we as democratic voters have an idea as to why this happened? Also, Deferred Action, giving Dreamers a two year reprieve from deportation and a work visa, is considered a small step in the right direction. A lot more has to be done to prove to Latinos that democrats deserve their vote.

10. Chiquitita, welcome to DU. Latinos and other minorities ARE the Democratic Party now

This is the essence of our modern party. Latinos are working from within to make sure issues affecting all communities are front and center. The entire party is dedicated to building a stronger America where everyone has opportunity. The types of policies that the Democratic Party advocates help everyone.

I think the idea that Latinos believe that the Democratic Party doesn't care about their issues is a falsehood that's being propagated right now. The election proved this out.

13. I agree but sometimes it is hard for people to be sure.

People have waited so long for the Dream Act, for real paths to citizenship. So, immigration is not the only thing of course. But for some people it is really, really important.

16. I can't imagine the fear that Latino's must live under. It's heartbreaking and

I am infuriated that the vibrant community is stereotyped the way that it is.

Know that a lot of Americans and DUers are fighting for equality for everyone. We may just not make it onto the news.

18. Undocumented and unafraid.

Its is great to have allies and support. There are also activists, young ones, who are undocumented and are giving us models of citizenship in the way they are getting involved. GUYA (Georgia undocumented youth alliance) blocked legislation in Georgia last year that would have banned them from all public colleges and universities.

The folks from the undocu bus that protested in Charlotte, they will be awesome Democrats when we get them some viable paths to citizenship.

14. True.

Also, I know people that support the GOP on a lot of issues except immigration. If the GOP decides to change it's stance, I thing we will see some Latino voters migrate to the GOP.

17. I think that's a ridiculous interpretation of what I'm saying. You are as bad as our pundits,

basically suggesting that if it wasn't for the Repub immigration stance, Latinos would vote Republican. That's just not true from any Latinos I know. They are not one issue voters, and they do not feel they voted against most of their values while voting for Obama. They do not seem to feel that immigration alone moved them to either change from their previous Repub voting or continue their regular Dem voting. They also do not seem to feel they would flock Repub if the Repubs embraced the Dream Act and reformed immigration laws.

At least not the few I seem to know nor do I think Latinos are stupid enough individually or as a group to vote based on one issue alone and risk voting against their ideals in multiple other issues. Additionally any informed Latino knows that Obama has outdone himself in deporting illegal Latinos, though he did install parts of the Dream Act. A little plus, a lot of minus. Latinos voted for Obama because he was the best choice for their lives, livelihoods, families, and values. Not just because of "immigration" on which the President doesn't actually score all that well.

4. Thanks, Suckers. We must send a note of thanks to the GOP bubble since it continues to drive

votes to the dems.

Objective journalism evolved for a very good reason - witness the confusion of people who shut themselves in the bubble.
