REPORT: John McAfee, The Antivirus Software Inventor, Is Wanted For Murder

Source: Business Insider

McAfee got rich developing antivirus software back in the eighties.

The company named after him, McAfee, Inc, sold to Intel for $7 billion in 2010.

Gizmodo also reports that McAfee has been living in Belize for a while now, spending most of his time there experimenting with drugs.
Antivirus pioneer John McAfee is on the run from murder charges, Belize police say. According to Marco Vidal, head of the national police force's Gang Suppression Unit, McAfee is a prime suspect in the murder of American expatriate Gregory Paul, who was gunned down Saturday night at his home in San Pedro Town on the island of Ambergris Caye

28. apt, though

McAfee has a terrible track record regarding billing, and it's almost as useful as a screen door on a submarine.

I consider McAfee to be a millimeter short of malware, and always advise its removal.

4. Oh my....

the same thought ran through my mind when I saw this.

Do you have any idea how many times after I canceled McAfee, which came installed on a computer I bought, they billed me for an annual fee. Finally had to have my credit card company threaten them with legal action if they continued.

Murder? Didn't expect that...but he sure does deserve punishment for the that horrid software.

16. You probably clicked the wrong box.

It clearly says when you try to cancel McAfee....

"Aren't you not sure that you don't want to uninstall McAfee? Please click "No." or "Cancel".

13. As a computer tech - every new install gets an automatic McAfee uninstall. Nothing but bloatware

and can't even catch viruses or trojans if it was handed a map, a flashlight, and a GPS enabled phone.

24. I have McAfee and don't really like it. I guess it works since I

haven't gotten any viruses . However, it's pain in the neck as pop-ups CONSTANTLY pop up saying you may have a problem so you have to go check. Actually, it's an AD for a more expensive version of McAfee...very annoying!

So next time I need to update...What's a good program to buy? Something user friendly and less expensive?

25. I use ms security essentials

Works fine and its free.

I have used a couple free antivirus programs, avast! And AVG both work well but at a certain point they start bugging you with popups to sell you the upgraded version. They both make it difficult to even find and download the free versions.

30. I uninstall any preloaded McAfee AV...

... when fixing Windows on my own, friend's and relative's computers. After uninstall, I run the registry cleaner that comes with CCleaner from Piriform. And after rebooting, I will run the registry cleaner again just to make sure nothing McAfee shows up again. Then I install Comodo Internet Security free version from http://www.comodo.com . Never have a virus or trojan relapse on those computers. Comodo is in the internet security business in the real world, providing security certificates for internet transactions all over the place, so it is in their interest to provide strong AV and firewalls to keep people feeling safe while making internet purchases. Or so I found out a few years ago. Years, no virus related problems.

32. I despise McAfee

I work tech support for an ISP and about 2 months ago they pushed an update that bricked every one of our customers pcs. They also have a tendency of bricking customers whose subscription runs out until they resubscribe.
I switched to Security Essentials and have had no complaints.

33. Avast works great.. and it has a free version that's fine...

been using it for years after getting weary of Norton interfering with everything and always seeming to need upgrade/renewal/ maintanance... Been using avast for 5 years now.. not a single virus. think it's now the most used anti-v in the world.. i see it everywhere i travel. the only thing about it is it has a voice in the default.. annoying, but easy fix..just disable sounds..

17. You can say that again!

I work at a computer store. When people are stunned that their computers are grossly infected and tell me, "But I have McAfee!," I have to break the news to them that it is better than nothing, but pretty close to nothing.

Actually, the amount of virus/spyware removal business that McAfee and Norton have created for us, we ought to send them a fruit basket for Christmas.

5. what the hell? he couldn't just be happy lounging on the beach with his billions?

EDIT: wait a minute! he was making his own "bath salts"??!?!?

Since our piece ran on last week, several readers have come forward with additional information that sheds light on the change in McAfee's behavior. In July of 2010, shortly before Allison Adonizio pulled the plug on their quorum-sensing project and fled the country, McAfee began posting on a drug-focused Russian message board called Bluelight about his attempts to purify the psychoactive compounds colloquially known as "bath salts."

8. At least the Celts know how to pronounce his name.

As someone with about 60% Scot and Irish background, his last anme is pronounced MIC, not MAC.

When I called the company back in the 1980's, when they were the top choice, they would pronounce is MAC. When I mentioned it to the support person, they admitted that everyone calls it MAC so they accepted it.
