SOUTHFIELD, Mich. — A man killed Sunday in a shootout at a suburban Detroit police headquarters first tried to shoot an officer behind bulletproof glass before officers exchanged gunfire with him, police said.

One police officer was wounded in the shootout in Southfield, a city of about 73,000 north of Detroit. The injured officer was in stable condition Sunday night with a single gunshot wound in the shoulder and expected to live.

Police Chief Eric Hawkins said investigators were trying to figure out why the gunman carried out the attack. The 64-year-old man had no known grievance with police.

“He didn’t say anything,” Hawkins said at a news conference. “The officers said he had a blank stare on his face.”

6. Southfield, MI is a very progressive community.

Lots of good people, multicultural, modern schools...worked there happily for many years. Very sorry to hear this awful news. I know many of the police officers there. I had a distant relation on the fire department. Godspeed the wounded officer.

8. Southfield is a suburb of Detroit, nice place. Notice how the article said...

.."in a Detroit police station". Another instance of giving Detroit a black eye.

11. Suburbia will become more dangerous than the big cities.

The media doesn't want to admit that, because that's where they live.

12. Yep I noticed

As a Michigander, I was wtf-ing at the article. Southfield is not Detroit. Metro-Detroit yes, Detroit no.

Also, I would like to point out to those outside the area that even all areas of Detroit proper are not bad. There are actually some pretty nice areas too.

21. Or perhaps they thought more people knew where Detroit was

than knew about Southfield.

... but now the article and its headline reference "suburban Detroit police station", not "Detroit police station".

16. Not a big deal, and I didn't alert on it

But sometimes there is an unspoken (or loudly proclaimed) cultural, racial, and economic gulf between Detroit and its suburbs.

As if an iron curtain had descended along the median strip of Eight Mile Road (dividing Detroit from Southfield and other suburbs).

It is a most unfortunate situation that contributes to Detroit's seeming inability to pull itself up, to be more like Chicago, Cleveland or Pittsburgh.

It's tragic what happened to Detroit. The direct result of outsourcing.

22. The guy was a veteran with throat cancer

Police on Monday identified the 64-year-old Southfield man who walked into the department building Sunday and began shooting, hitting an officer before being killed by return fire.

The man — identified as Harold Joseph Collins — had no known motive, criminal history but was in "poor health," Southfield police said Monday. Collins used a .380-caliber handgun and was a military veteran, police added.

"Based on the behavior of this individual, it is my opinion, and the opinion of in investigating officers, that this person was struggling with some very serious internal issues," Southfield Police Chief Eric Hawkins said Monday at a press conference.

Collins' family said Monday that he had suffered for years from throat cancer and had been "very sick."

23. Vietnam Veteran?

Throat cancer maybe as a result of his service in Vietnam? Exposure to Agent Orange?
All speculation, but I think it's safe to say that this was a case of suicide by cop.
Prayers and a speedy recovery to the wounded officer.
